nook color

anyone get the b&n email about this?
there is a new nook color coming out that is all touchscreen and in color (obvi)

looks cool, except it's backlit, which is why i didnt get the ipad and went for the nook in the first place. love the e-ink. it makes it feel like you're actually reading a book instead of staring at a computer screen.

anyone looking to get on of these?

Re: nook color

  • I heard about it as well, and I'm not really interested, for the reasons you named.
  • yeah, i felt like they were just trying to make a different version of the ipad.
why would you want your book in color anyways?

  • I think it's great for reading things like magazines, with big splashy photographs and so on. But who wants to spend several hundred bucks on a device for reading magazines?

Unless there's added functionality, like a photo editor (which would be cool) or video playback (also cool). If it has those features, it might be useful for folks who want a mini-ipad at a mini price, but if it doesn't have some features beyond basic e-reader stuff...who cares?
  • Really wanted it, until I heard that the battery life is 8 hours.  For me, the whole point of the thing is taking it on a transatlantic flight, say, and not having to worry about battery if I want to read in the airport before departure and then during the flight.

I think I'll probably ask for a Kindle for my birthday (thank you, FI) instead.

  • See, I think the appeal of an e-reader for most people over a tablet/ipad is that it's JUST an e-reader. I want to curl up with a book in bed and not be distracted by things like email or messenger or checking TK, the way I would be on a computer. Plus, the whole backlit issue. I work at a computer all day and I know it affects my eyes by the end of the day.

My Kindle battery lasts several weeks (I turn the wireless off unless I'm using it). It's awesome.

  • From what I've read (doing Nook/Kindle research today) it has an 8 hour battery life (with wifi turned off) and the screen makes it difficult to read (similar to the ipdad). The review said it was great if you are looking for a reader with magazines, pdf's, word documents, kids books etc. Basically a poor mans ipad. If you are just looking for a regular reading go with the classic Nook.
