Kids Bikini Tops

Did any of you see this on STFU, Parents this morning? I feel kinda on the fence on the issue. I'm against bikinis for kids in the first place, but these don't look "padded" to me. I'd call them heavily lined.

Re: Kids Bikini Tops

  • I think the style of top (sort of triangle-y) is inappropriate for a pre-pubescent, period. The only bikini I was allowed to get away with when I was arond 7/8 was the kind that was like a sports bra. It definitely had full coverage (but not padding!). I think something like that or a tankini is okay for a kid, but not something that looks like it should outline a body part that hasn't actually developed yet.

  • I had a bikini when I was 2 years old...my grandma bought one for me (it was unpadded, and obviously a baby bikini because it showed off my awesome baby potbelly).  It absolutely horrified my father.  I can't even imagine what he would have said if it had padding.

Let kids be kids.  They have so few years to run around and have fun without worrying if they have breasts.  Why give them a reason to even think about padding and cleavage at that age?

  • Kids don't need to be showing any skin between their shoulders and their legs.  If nothing else, they don't need to be exposing that much of their body to the sun.

  • I think they look heavily lined, but I don't like the idea of little kids in bikinis in the first place, so either way I think they're sketchy.

  • Eh, I don't care.

I had a bikini when I was very small.  I guess it was easier for getting on and off.  However, this was the 70's when it wasn't uncommon for girls to just wear bottoms at that age anyway.  I just feel like there are more important things to care about than bikinis on 2 year olds.

But Smokey, these are for girls ages 7-8. I think that makes a difference when they're still children, yet perhaps developing and on the cusp of puberty. To me it's not the same as a 2 year old running around in their underwear, which is sort of expected in toddlers.

  • I think the inside definitely looks padded, and it ostensibly outlines the chest. I think it is totally inappropriate, and am also in the "kids shouldn't wear bikinis" camp.
Along that lines, I don't think pre-teens should wear makeup either.

  • I literally wore a yellow polka-dot bikini when I was 1 1/2 or so.  My mom has a picture... but then it was one pieces until..late high school.. maybe.  I swam competitively and parents were too cheap to buy a bikini when I had half a dozen one piece suits laying around.. LOL.
  • I think the ones shown there are totally inapprpriate, but bikinis in general don't bother me.

Like the sports bra tops types, or the boy short bottoms - I think those are fine.
  • I think a tankini is cute on girls, but padded at 8 years?  I wouldn't let my daughters wear something like that.  My 3yo has a tankini and is adorable in it.  She was also in an Old Navy fashion show this past January and wore a cute tankini.  But a bikini like that isn't appropriate at that age.
  • I dont' mind bikinis on kids. When I was young I wore them because it was so much easier to go to the bathroom in a hurry and they were easy to get in and out of. I think there are designs out that are not appropriate for kids (string bikini, adult topic words printed on them) but I don't get upset by them for the most part.
  • I wouldn't put my 7 year old in a bikini. Supposedly, the company that made that one said the padding wasn't to enhance anything, it was to hide early development on girls, how, I don't know. I would think padding would add to it. So I guess they thought they were doing something good, but it didn't swing that way.

Eh, I had a bikini in 3rd or 4th grade and you should have seen the ones I was wearing come 7th and 8th grade (Thank you 80's and Too Hot Brazil).  I honestly don't get the big deal.  I've got bigger issues with the tots in pageants prancing around like ponies with more makeup than Tammy Faye.  Bikinis, not so much.
