HELP!!! My skin hates me

Growing up I NEVER had problems with acne (except of course during TOM).  In the last 2 years or so my skin has decided to rebel.  I've tried pro-activ and it worked for a few months (maybe 6 months) and then maybe my face just got used to it but it stopped doing anything for me.  Nothing else OTC works and I can't afford to go see a dermatologist (I have no health insurance).  Does anyone have any at home remedies or tried something that works for you.

I'm starting to get acne on my shoulders and chest and I'm so grossed out by it especially with swimsuit season just literally around the corner!!!

  • My dermatologist told me to make sure anything i use has moisturizer in it, so your face wont dry out.  I was also told to use Lever 1000 to wash my face with.  I am definitely in your boat, the proactiv helped for a few months then stopped.  I am trying noxema with the lever 2000 as of right now.

You have over 1 year until your wedding, I'd get yourself to a dermatologist. If you've tried loads of products chances are you need some extra help from a dr. That's what I did and I have never been happier. I wasted hundreds of dollars on products and now I pay $15 every 6 months for an Rx.

ETA: just read your money situation. I would try to get to a regular dr. They can help you out too. They might be able to get you some antibacterial wipes or a prescription.
  • Adult acne needs to be treated differently than teenage acne.  As people get older, their skin thins, becomes more senstive, and more easily irritated.  Harsh products like Pro-Activ, while they may clear the acne you have now, tend to just irritate adult skin and make it worse over time.  I've been fighting acne for 15 years, and as I get older, I find the more and more gentle products without harsh chemicals I use, the better my skin gets.  It's best (for most people) to use products formulated for adult skin/adult acne.  Aveeno and Noxema make two really great, gentle, medicated foaming acne washes (and other products) formulated for adult skin.  If you've run the gamut of "teenage" acne products, I'd check those out.

This will sound scary, but my skin has most improved since I ditched cleansers and treatment products and switched to oil cleansing.  I follow it up with a diluted tea tree oil solution that I apply with a cotton ball like a toner.

  • Thank you so much guys I will try your treatments first before I decide to go down the way of a doctor.

It sucks because if I use a cleanser my face dries out, but if I use a moisturizer my face gets oily.  There is no inbeween for me and I'm so frustrated.

Sounds crazy but 50/50 water and apple cider vinegar. The vinegar's acidity kills acne causing bacteria while restoring the skins natural PH balance

  • When you switch to something that dries out your skin try only using it every other day at first and gradually work your way to everyday, then twice a day. I swear by any face wash and treatment that has 10% benzoyl peroxide. It will dry out your face if you use too much too fast, so start any new skin regime slowly, and moisturize with a lightweight moisturizer.

  • @ Hippinhipster:  I might just have to try that.  It does sound odd but I'm sure it does work and I'm surprised I never thought of that.  Vinegar also helps with heart burn oddly enough.  The acidity is just the right amount to be helpful not hurtful.  Does it make your face stink though?

  • I have had really good luck the Murad's acne line. You can get a 30 day supply and it includes cleanser, toner, moisterizer and spot treatment (ULTA.COM) I have sensitve/oily skin and this is gentle enough for day and night use.

It really only stings a little if it's like a opened wound. Like if you just popped a zit it stings just a bit. But other then that it pretty much just stinks but that goes away once it dries
