Anyone else not going on a honeymoon?

F and I talked about it and we just don't have the extra money to go on a honeymoon. We have some savings, but not enough. We can't bring ourselves to spend it on something like that when an emergency could arise later.

I have a couple of questions. 1- Is there anyone else in the same boat? 2- Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Re: Anyone else not going on a honeymoon?

  • We aren't taking a honeymoon. 1. No money, 2. But we will go next summer, our wedding present from my grandparents is to use their timeshare next year, so its just our expenses while we are there. That would give us enough time to save what we need.

  • probably not.  my dad told me his best friend (who I've always called 'uncle Nate') is thinking about sending us on a HM for a wedding present.  but if that doesn't materialize, then nope - can't afford to go on one.

if we don't, we might just go away to a bed and breakfast for a few days or something.

  • What about taking a mini-moon?  Just go some place for a few days within driving distance.  You don't even have to leave the room.  ;)

  • We are taking one, but it will be about a month later.

My suggestion would be to either take a mini-moon like PP suggested or save up and go on a kickass trip for your first anniversary.

  • We are waiting until Jan-Feb to go. We don't have the cash to go after the wedding and FI is a reisdent and can't take the time off. We will prob take the monday off after the wedding and stay an extra night in the hotel. Plus it gives us something to look forward to after all the wedding excitment ends.

  • We had planned to drive to Ft. Jackson, SC to see FI's son graduate from Basic Training. With FI not working, that may not be feasible due to current funds - and due to restrictions a new employer may enforce if we are blessed and he finds something in the next 19 days!

If we are not able to follow through on that plan, I am going to suggest a couple of nights away from our normal routine. Even if we just drive 45 minutes to a hotel. We have discussed beginning to save (post-wedding) for a small cruise for our one year anniversary. I get him for life ;) I figure we can work out the celebration part along the way!

  • We might go on one, but probably not. If we save and are very frugal, the plan would be to go to Disney World w/ my daughter as a "familymoon", so it'd have to be Christmas vacation or Spring break so she doesn't miss school. But it always seems like something comes up that cuts into what we do have saved for it.

  • Can you take a mini-moon to a nearby bread and breakfast or a nearby town or city?  It doesn't have to be an all out huge vacation where you drop 10k, but you can have a small vacation just the two of you for not that much money.  I would HIGHLY suggest checking groupon for a hotel that you'd be interested in going to; sometimes they have really good deals on there for nice places!
  • Just curious, what's the cutoff between "minimoon" and "honeymoon"? We're doing 4 days at a B&B  in Key West, and we consider that our honeymoon, even though it's not as extravagant as a lot of people do.

For those unable to afford to travel - could you do some sort of staycation? Even something silly like camping out in your backyard, or trading houses with a friend for a few days just so you have a little change of scenery? The important thing is to spend time together and decompress after all the stress of the wedding, and that doesn't have to mean travel.
  • When we first planned the wedding time frame, between fall of this year and Spring of 2013, I wasn't sure of what FH's vacation schedule would be so I had my mind on a mini moon... just to go away for a couple of day ... de-stress and... "enjoy" being married.  I'm glad we can both take the entire week after off.
  • We are not doing a HM. FI doesn't get any PTO or Vacation time at either of his jobs, so if we want to pay the bills we can't afford it right now. We also have two small kids, and we don't have anyone we can leave them with overnight locally so it would be a big hassle. We are saving up for a trip to Disney- my parents/DS's BD will watch the kids and we will go to Walt Disney World! That's the plan - if it doesn't happen then next summer we will do a family trip instead. (Kids are too young to enjoy WDW)

  • 1st marriage: there was no honeymoon.  We said we would take little trips here and there.  Yeah, that didn't happen either.

2nd marriage: FI just started a new job and I just started my 10th year of teaching.  We can't take off a week right now.  We're also trying to buy a house and might be closing in the next few weeks (please God!)  The plan is to take a spring break trip.  I hope by then we'll be settled in the house and enjoying married life!
  • No honeymoon for us either.  I found out I am pregnant about 3 months ago, so any extra money we have will go towards the baby.  That's life!  After the baby, we plan on taking a week in the summer to travel to family's lakeside cabin.
  • Congrats Kerrigrrl!!!

  • We don't have the funds to be able to take a honeymoon.  We were getting optomistic there for awhile cause FI Dad kept asking where we would want to go, but I'm not going to hold my breath on that.  We did agree though that we would at least get out of town for a couple days even if its just going somewhere & getting a hotel.  We just want to get away, just us.
