Adding colour to bridesmaids without sashes?

My favourite colour is green.. to the point that most of the things I own are green (or complimentary shades, especially browns.. brown is probably my second favourite colour). I'd always sort of pictured having green bridesmaids dresses (probaby a sage or mint or something similar), with nice subtle brown/tan/something accents. Very earthy colours. Anyway, my fiance likes blue, and really wants to wear a blue tie. I LOVE that he cares enough to want to have a say, and I'd love to incorporate a deep blue with a pale green. I like the colours together, except when I put a blue sash on a green dress, it looks kind of silly. Tweaking the colours helps, and I don't HATE it, but I was wondering if there were other ways to incorporate my desire for a green wedding with his desire for blue accents. I love creative suggestions, and it's early enough that I'm not tied to anything except the general colours :)

PS, here are some dresses showing approximately the colours I'm thinking... (again, open to suggestions on tweaking the colours and whatever accessories might be a different way to tie in the blue than a sash). I like the blue in the top picture better, or maybe it's the satiny feel of it.

  • Can you add the blue color in flowers? I could see a green dress (maybe with a brown sash?) and blue flowers. Does your FI have a shade of blue he prefers? I think you could do that sage green color, brown and navy blue and it would look classy.  Or maybe adding a hair accessory for each of them in the color?

I think the guys could wear blue ties and your girls wear sage green dresses and it would still look good. They don't necessarily need to be matchy-matchy.
  • My colors were navy blue and kelly green. The girls wore navy blue dresses and I bought kelly green wide width ribbon at a fabric store. I used the ribbon as sashes. 5 dollar sashes. Also, it helps to think outside the box when it comes to BM dresses. My BM dresses were from Banana Republic but think about ModCloth too. Also, green hydrangeas are an excellent way to infuse green.

  • It's great that your fiance has a preference and that you want to incorporate his desires. Too many brides forget that the wedding is their groom's just as much as theirs.  I agree that sashes aren't the best route.  Some ideas: 1) You could use a navy instead of the brighter royal blue.  I've seen muted green combined with navy, and it looks quite clean and fresh.  2)  Use blues in your BM bouquets.  They'll presumabily already include green through greenery, and it would all tie together.  I think this would look especially nice if you used bouquet stem wraps or ribbons in the white/ivory shade of your gown and the men's shirts.  3) You may have your heart set on the sage/mint, but have you considered using more of a blue-green that could satisy you both?  You needn't put the BMs in bright turqoiuse if that's too much for you (though turquoise does look great with brown accessories).  There are light aquas that are lovely.  And the groom could wear that same shade tie or a deeper blue-green tie would really be striking and set him apart from the groomsmen.  I'd love to know if any of the suggestions strike your fancy, and I'll keep my thinking cap on.  Best wishes!

  • I agree with the PP about using blue in the bouquets.  You could also do a bold blue statement necklace like these: Clicky 1! and Clicky 2! (although keep in mind that if you require your BMs to wear certain jewelry, you really should buy it for them)

I third the vote for blue in the bouquets!  Some flowers. like hydrangeas for instance, come in gorgeous shades of green and blue that would look really nice together
  • blue enamel chandelier earrings
wide cuff bracelet with blue in it
    blue ribbon wrapped around bouquets
    blue accent flower in hair
  • Could you look for some green brooches and matching jewellery from Etsy?

Jewellery, shoes, and flowers are all the ideas that I have if you don't want sashes.  Or pashminas/shawls if you're getting married in a chilly month!

I agree that brooches/pins/jewelry/shawls/shoes/flowers are all good ways of adding an accent color.  I don't think the sash looks bad though... Could you add a green flower or brooch on top of the sash that matches the dress to make it more cohesive?
Here's a sash with greens, blues, and browns:

Thanks all so much!! I've definitely been thinking a lot about bouquets today, and I LOVE some of the suggestions you guys have made! Thanks for all the Etsy links and everything! I've got lots to think about now, my thinking had totally stalled on this, so thanks for the help!! I'll keep checking back for more suggestions!! I think I'm going to go to a fabric store now though, haha, and think about colours!!
  • Add the blue in smaller ways like flowers, hair decoration of some kind, statement jewekry?
