Bustle trouble

Hey there ladies, I've got a question for you. So I've got a Maggie Sottero with a *crazy* long train. My seamstress, who I've worked with for years, can only pick the train up this far, before running into the top of the lining:

And here's the train un-bustled, about 3 feet long (this was when I was trying on the satin version. Same dress, different fabric):

It cannot be picked up any further; the loop for the bustle is attached at the very top of the lining, directly under the bottom of the corset.

Now then, my seamstress has had 18 years experience in making and altering dresses...however, I don't think she's ever done a bustle quite as complex as one that needs to be done on a Maggie. And I'm clueless as to what to do too. I figure I'll need multiple points, but where?

Any of you have a rediculously long train? How is yours bustled? I exceeded my budget on the dress already, so I can't exactly take it to a bridal salon and spend $300 on just a bustle...

Re: Bustle trouble

  • Mine isn't that crazy, but my seamstress did add multiple bustles to trim it as much as possible. I have a button under the corset, like yours, but also two buttons on each side to let it tuck in even more.

Yeah, we tried that out with safety pins, but it didn't hang nicely. The sides were picked up off the floor, but the back still came out the same distance. Maybe do three points like that, then one more in the back? Like, add a bustle to the middle bustle? Anyone seen something like that?
  • I have the Maggie Sottero Angelina and my train is crazy long like yours!  My seamstress got it so it was just touching the ground and said they could do better if I wanted.  So they did a french bustle with 5 points.  It took them about 3 tries to actually get it though and some brain storming.  They said a French bustle is the only kind that will work because the train is so long.  I have pictures, but they are at home on my camera.  I can upload them tonight it you need.

Yes, please, pictures would be excellent! If it's not too much trouble, could you put little arrows where the points are? That way, I can show my seamstress and she can try to replicate it.
  • My train isnt that long, but we are doing a french bustle as well, It seems like it would work better, also I was told (before I bought my dress and was trying one on with a longer train) that it is possible to "double bustle" or pick it up and then pick it up again to get the length in. I was very very concerned about not being able to walk, so I didnt go with the longer train, but maybe ask your seamstress about doing a double bustle? My understanding is something like this:

so it actually has seperate pick up points above eachother not just beside.

  • toothpastechica - that's exactly the picture I needed! Then with two more points on the sides. I wonder how it would look with the pick-ups already on the skirt...we shall see!
  • I've seen a bustle on a bustle, if that makes sense... so having the first bustle go as far up as it can like you have it already, then treating it as if there's no bustle and putting in another bustle point part way up. Depending on how heavy your dress is, it might work... talk to your seamstress though! and if she says she can't do anything, try another one to see.

  • Mine is just as busy, and we were able to get it up.  We did a European/French bustle though and it turned out fantastic.

I would recommend showing the picture to other seamstresses and seeing what they think.

  • Here's a link from Project Wedding showing the different kinds of bustles: clicky

Mine is sort of like the ballroom bustle, it's five points in a straight line across the very top of the skirt, near where the bodice is.

  • Great article Panther.  I was actually wondering what all the different bustle's looked like and just had never had the time to look.  I just went with what my seamstress did and it turned out great.  Mine is the french bustle with I forget how many points on it.  That was my mom's job to pay attention to that one!  I have lots of layers on my chapel train and so the french just made it so that when it is bustled up, it just looks like the rest of the dress.

If I were you, I would look at doing the double/triple french.  It looks to me like you need more and more points and/or doing the double/triple.  I think that would be a good solution.

  • Before bustle

    With bustle

Sorry this is late and hopefully it makes sense...but what they did was first take the part that touches the ground and pull it all the way up from the bottom underneath.  Then they pinned one on each side of the center but not like right at the center.  That still didn't get everything so then they did 2 more wider than that.  But as you can see it is still touching a bit which i'm not sure if I like.  If you have anymore questions let me know.  Also I am going to try it on again on Saturday so I can get more info if you need it.

  • Thanks everyone, this is gonna help me so much! I know my seamstress can do it, I just don't think she's done it before, so pictures definitely help.
