Chocolate Wedding Cake?

I HATE white cakes with a passion. I want a chocolate cake. My mother completely disagrees with the idea of it and suggests that I have a traditional white cake and then do the grooms cake chocolate. Negative. To me thats like saying I can't do something just because I'm female. FI doesn't care about the cake at all. My idea is to have the chocolate cake, with white icing and then do the little decorations on it (like flowers) in our theme colors.
I haven't been to any non-tradtional weddings. Are chocolate cakes common or am I going to be an outcast?

Our cake was a tuxedo with rapberry mousse filling and white buttercream frosting.  We got rave reviews (it was a very yummy cake!).

  • Neither one of us likes white cake, so we are alternating layers between a dark chocolate cake with raspberry filling and carrot cake! Pick a cake that you and your FI love, not one to please your mom. Plus, nontraditional desserts are becoming very popular at weddings - pie, cupcakes, etc. - so why shouldn't nontraditional cake flavors be okay?

  • I've seen all variations of cakes as well. Most of them have tiers with different flavors. We're doing a cupcake tower and alterating with chocolate, red velvet & strawberry. No white cake for us either.
  • You can have any flavor cake you want. We had four flavors of wedding cake: white, red velvet, carrot, and chocolate. All with cream cheese icing, yum!

  • Thanks ladies! Chocolate is definitely the route we wanna take lol :)

  • wth?  Your mom is putting up a stink about the flavor of the cake?  What is she going to do if it's chocolate at the wedding?  Throw a fit?  I don't understand why she thinks it has to be white...

  • Both of my parents are very traditional/old-fashioned/conservative. That is just how she feels about it. But we are probably going to do chocolate with white icing. That way everyone is satisfied.

  • You can certainly do what you want but if you are having multiple tiers, you might want to make at least one of them white or some variation like white with a filling.  I always look forward to a piece of non-chocolate cake at weddings.  Plus it would appease your mom.  ;)

  • It's YOUR wedding cake!  Unless your mom is paying for it, feel free to do what you want in regards to flavor.  I personally don't like chocolate cake, but I wouldn't get upset if I attended a wedding where the cake was chocolate.

For the record, FI and I are having cinnamon-vanilla cake with white chocolate filling.  That is our only flavor.  Those who don't like it don't have to eat it.
  • if you want a chocolate cake HAVE ONE! it's not your mom's cake-it's YOURS!!!

  • All cake should be chocolate.

White cake is sooo ... boring.  Tongue Out
  • I like white wedding cake. I like chocolate cake. I'd be happy with either...or just about any other flavor.

Wedding cake flavor is competely up to you.
  • If your mother wants to stick to "tradition" and being "old-fashioned" get a copy of Amy Vanderbilt's Complete Guide to Etiquette 1958. [Or about that edition. It's on google books.] It says the most traditional wedding cake is a dense fruitcake. She should be more willing to break with "tradition" when she finds the alternative is fruitcake.
  • Chocolate Rules!!!

That's really all there is too it.  =)
    (I come from a family of choco-holics!)

Elisabeth- Fun fact!  Haha Never would have thought about that.

[QUOTE]Wedding cakes can be any flavor. Not everyone can eat chocolate, though. Some people are actually allergic to it (gives me migraines).

<div>My MOH is allergic. She gets a really bad stomach sickness and will be out throught the next day (headaches too). But I love chocolate so we're doing almond cake with two tiers of chocolate. Why not have both?</div>
  • I had chocolate at my wedding years ago.  My parents had chocolate even more years ago.  My daughter is planning on chocolate.
  • We are doing 1 tier white cake and 2 tiers chocolate cake.  My FI wanted 2 things for the reception, steak and chocolate cake!  So he's getting them both!  Chocolate is fine to have as a wedding cake flavor.  Maybe your mom is thinking you are going to have a chocolate fudge icing on the outside and not the white buttercream???
  • Your mother is crazy.  Unless she's paying for the cake, thank her for her opinion and move on.

But I agree with PPs.  Rather than do all chocolate, it's much more crowd pleasing to do a different flavor on each layer.  This is actually what I've seen at the majority of weddings we've been to.  I was crazy in love with our oreo layer.
  • I think it's more than fine to have chocolate cake if that is what you like. FWIW, each layer of our cake is a different flavor (and we will have a half-sheet of German chocolate cake in the back) because I like white cake, Fi likes chocolate, and our baker makes the best cakes. We couldn't have picked just one flavor. Maybe youcould do a sheet if white cake for your mom? Wedding desserts are ever changing. Hopefully she will come around.

  • We had our cake tasting yesterday.  I knew going in that I LOVE this baker's chocolate cake.  I was curious about the pumpkin spice cake, so we tried that and a lemon cake as well.  The baker offered an additional flavor to test which wasn't planned - white cake with raspberry filling.  My fiance loved that one as well.

One thing I hadn't thought about (being the chocolate lover) and that our baker pointed out was that if for some reason cake were to get dropped during our cake cutting at the wedding, it is probably preferrable that the cake not be dark brown!  I hadn't thought about that.  Chocolate cake on the wedding dress would not make me too happy (if it were to happen).

Our bottom layer will be white cake with raspberry filling.
The next two layers will both be pumpkin spice cake with cream cheese filling.
White buttercream icing on entire cake.

If we have a groom's cake for the rehearsal dinner, it will be chocolate mousse bliss with chocolate ganache. Yum!
  • we're having a chocolate cake w/ chocolate mousse filling and white buttercream frosting... i'm getting hungry just thinking about it :)
