Out of State Officiant

I'm getting married by pastor from Virginia. The only thing I can find that he has to do in order to marry us is take the license to the court house himself. Is this true? Anyone dealt with this?

Re: Out of State Officiant

  • The laws vary from state to state, so best to ask this on the Virginia board.  I'm in Atlanta, and this is an international board, so your best bet is to ask the local VA board.

Generally, though, you apply for a license, then the officiant files it (laws vary about witnesses, what time frame, who needs to sign, etc.) and then you can be issued a wedding certificate, or decree, proving the marriage is legal and binding.  People get the two terms of license and certificate confused all the time, though.
