ATL or MIA

We are flying from Philadelphia to St. Lucia.  We have two options for layovers, Miami or Atlanta.  Any insight on customs in both of these airports?

  • Trust me when I say go into Atlanta! We went through Miami back in March on our way home from SL and it was a nightmare! Click on the link above my siggy pic and read the end of my review for 2012 SL. That will explain it all. We've gone in ATL several times and have had no problems.
  • well, you'll only have to go thorugh customs and immigration on the way home, not the way there, so be sure to leave PLENTY of time for that on the return flight-get your luggage, go through both, go through security again etc... i've done it in miami and it wasn't too bad really-if you have enough time.
never been to atl airport on an intl layover so i can't say.

  • i also have to add-if you can get yourself to newark or JFK-there are direct flights and they're both relatively close to philly-actually newark is about an hour or so and jfk is about 75 mins-both being less than them time it would take to do the layover.

Thanks!!  Unforunately it ends up being more expensive for us to go out of Newark because we are doing a multi city flight.  We live in Minneapolis, so we are going MSP to PHL, PHL to UVF, UVF to MSP.  By going from EWR to UVF it adds about $200.

  • I've found customs and immigration in MIA to be a NIGHTMARE, but no experience w/ ATL...could be even worse!  I like to connect through the Miami airport anyway though, because I'm obsessed with those Cuban guava pastries that they have at a bunch of the food places, lol.

Never been to either, but I used to travel a lot for work, and ATL has the biggest airport in the country, and also probably deals with a bit less international travel compared to MIA, so I would definitely do ATL.

EDIT: Also there will probably be more vacation travelers in MIA, and business travelers in ATL. Vacation travelers hold up the line and have tons of luggage, whereas business travelers are who you always want to be behind in line.

cant you just fly to one place and then to st lucia? if it were me i'd look around for flights that have only one stop. for example: MSP to JFK to St lucia? even if it adds money one stop is FAR better than 2 and, imo, worth the $

  • I live in Atlanta and have traveled a lot of the country.  I have flown directly back into Atlanta and Miami after internationally traveling.  Please, please, please do yourself a favor and pick Atlanta.  It is a way easier, cleaner, nicer process than dealing with the Miami airport.  Atlanta is the busiest airport in the world.  They have this process down to a tee.
  • Never been to the airport in Miami but the city its self is a mess so i cant imagine the night mare the airprot would be!!

Atlantas airport is amazing!! everyone is sooo nice and it is easy to get around!!

Perfect!  That is what I was thinking...I have been to both airports but never through customs so I didn't know what it would be like.  We will definately book ATL!

Unforunately no.  We fly from MSP on Sat to PHL.  We stay in PHL for a week (that is where we are getting married at.  And then leave from PHL to St. Lucia, on Monday.  There is no point in coming back to PHL so we are just taking the return flight the following Monday back to MSP.  It is a mess but that is what happens when you live, get married in and honeymoon in all different spots.  Also the cost to rent a car out of EWR is much more expensive than PHL.
