When should I start looking/order invites?

I think I want to set my RSVP date earlier than we are supposed to because I'm sure I'm going to have to chase people and I want to get my final numbers early on... so if I said my invites out 4 months in advance with an RSVP date 2 months in advance is that good or no? So I have approx. 7 months until I think I want to send them out... when should I order them?

I think it depends on what you're looking for. Something totally custom you could start looking to get ideas now, find who you want to work with and they'll give you a timeline. If it's something out of a catalog I think they only take a maybe a month.

    Our wedding was June 5.

    RSVP was May 8.

    Sent out on April 5.

Ordered our invites late January. Ordered responses/ reception cards mid February. Had everything by mid March.

Not that I would suggest waiting until the last minute. But as Jaimie said , but depends on what you are looking for. We ordered invites from www.theamericanwedding.com and they were great.

But I started ordering samples to get a look/see as to what was out there in late November. Which was 7 months out. So about the same time as you are now.

So I'd say start looking now and order samples. And if you want custom work done, look on etsy now. Other wise, you don't need to order this early. HTH!

Thanks for all the suggestions... I guess I should decide what I want and go from there :)

Wedding is 7/31 - RSVP date was 7/1 - mailed invites last week of April.

Had a pretty good response rate.  Had to chase down 5 or 6 from a list of 78 invites sent.

I didn't order invites, but made them with a kit from Gartner Studios.  I was unemployed at the time with lots of time on my hands and not a lot of money to spend.

I'd be careful about sending them out too far in advance.  Unless you're planning a wedding on a holiday weekend or during the summer travel season I wouldn't send them out any more than 3 months before the wedding date.

Leave an extra week or two between the date your caterer wants the numbers and the date on the invitation.   You'll need it to chase down the delinquent RSVPers.
