Sandals Royal Caribbean vs. Sandals Negril

Has anyone been to either one of these resorts?  I am trying to decide between the two for my honeymoon and I can't decide whcih is better?

  • I haven't been but the excellence chain and secrets are suppose to be just as good or better as sandals. Check out trip advisor.

You'll probably get a better response if you post this on the Honeymoon board, when I used to lurk over there, there was always a lot of talk about Sandals.  <div>
</div><div>We've stayed at Montego Bay but had dinner one night at Royal Caribbean and it seemed nice really nice.  We loved Sandals so you probably can't go wrong with either choice.  What it really comes down to is the convenience of the airport - RC is pretty close but you'll deal with noisy planes.  I think Negril is about a two hour bus ride?</div>

  • I've been to both and to Jamaica about 10 times. I'm in love everything Negril. The town's vibe and laid back beach feel is awesome. However, in terms of entertainment, restaurants, bars you'd be better at RC.

We did Sandals Antigua, and in hindsight, I'd have definitely gone with St Lucia instead.  The reason for this is my personal opinion is it's a waste of money to go to some foreign country and not actually see the country.  We rented a car and spent the day driving around the island.  In the case of Antigua, there's really not all that much to see as far as scenery.  There's tons of beaches, but you can only photograph so many of those.  St Lucia looks like it would be much more fun to explore and more diverse things to photograph.  We skipped over it because flights were a few hundred more per person.  This also brings me to Jamaica; I've wanted to go there for man many years since I'm heavily into reggae and dancehall music, but we didn't go to any of the Sandals in Jamaica because I knew I'd want to go drive around, go to non-tourist real reggae clubs, etc. and that's simply not safe.

Regarding Sandals in general, we did a private plunge pool butler suite and it was incredible.  It was our own standalone private building with its own small pool and hot tub in a fenced in back yard.  The butler service was amazing; you get a cell phone when you check in and can call and have food and drinks brought to wherever you feel like.  The downside is I feel that Sandals is not a good value; they're extremely expensive if you want something more than just a hotel room and the food, in my opinion, was average.

In contrast, we went to an Excellence resort last year and loved it.  The food was far better than Sandals, but the downside is they do not offer any butler rooms like Sandals had, and I'll always miss that.  However, I don't miss it enough to pay the price difference so I don't see us going to Sandals again in the future unless something changes.  Not to say we didn't love that portion of our honeymoon, it just doesn't seem like that great of a value after experiencing something better.
