    I wasn't sure yet.  I'm torn because we are doing a beach ceremony but then we are doing a formal reception in a ballroom afterwards.  I'm thinking of saying semi-formal but having people bring flip flops for the ceremony?

    Unless your wedding is black tie you don't tell guests what to wear. Presumably your guests are adults and there could be issues with people taking offense with telling them how to dress. The best you can do is inform them of the type of location the ceremony/reception is at and also dictate the formality by the type of invitation you choose.

    You also should not expect people to bring flip flops to the ceremony. I would provide those for your guests. If you are the one hosting a complicated affair, it is up to you to make your guests as comfortable as possible - not just expect them to deal.

    I'm assuming she's referring to those guests who call and ask about what to wear....

    Depending on which person it was, we either said "summer semi-formal/beach formal" or "business casual/semi-formal" (for the cousin who would hear the word beach and show up in a bathing suit with a coverup/t-shirt....

    The wedding is 7 months away and I'm already receiving MANY questions about the details of the wedding so i decided to make a website.  I just got thrown off by the attire section.  I ended up omiting this section and just explained in the ceremony section that it was at a beach and that people could feel free to bring flip flops or go barefoot.  We will be having a big basket of flip flops for people who want them, but we're having 180 guests and on a budget so I won't be getting 180 pairs.
