Music during dinner and cocktail hour

Do most people have music during the dinner and cocktail hour?  Or would it be better to cut the cost of the DJ by not playing music until after the dinner?

Re: Music during dinner and cocktail hour

  • You should at least have background music on, but it doesn't need to be actively DJed.  Put together a mix CD or iTunes playlist.

This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • We're having our cocktail hour done by the folks who do the live Irish music at our pub and then we'll have the band play softly in the background during dinner.

Exactly. It would be a little awkward to just have silence in the background. Most DJs will want to do the whole thing (that way they can get there early and do sound checks and whatnot).

  • Our DJ has to be there the whole time... he wouldn't be able to come in while dinner is in service and set up quick enough for the after-dinner portion of the night.  So, for us, he's going to do some good non-dancing, but nice background music during dinner and cocktail hour, and then we'll really get the party going as soon as dinner is over.

  • We plan to have a DJ play during the cocktail hour (transitioning from the string quartet) and into dinner.  The play lists (one for the cocktail hour, a separate one for dinner) are decidedly different from that for dancing though.
  • Even if you do an iPod for the dinner, your DJ is going to have to be there already set up.  I was at a wedding where the DJ was setting up for the reception in an adjoining space during the ceremony and it was incredibly distracting.
  • Our DJ is doing the dinner and cocktail hour. For both, we are thinking more formal/classical music though because we feel it is more fitting for the event.

  • Ditto what others have said about having the DJ set up. They usually set up before the reception or cocktail hour starts anyways, so you might as well have some classical/easy-listening music playing during that time.

  • Our DJ is doing both. He is just playing some light music so there isn't any akward silent periods.

Our ceremony and reception are at the same venue - an old church that's been converted into a fine dining establishment (still looks and feels like a church)

Our pianist for the ceremony will move his electric piano outside to the patio for the cocktail hour, and then we'll just use the restaurant's usual house dining music (nice jazz mix) during the meal.
