garden people

How do you keep ants out of your plants?? We don't have a ton, but they're pissing me off! I'm very protective of my little baby seedlings, lol.

Also, we have a basil plant, and it's MASSIVE. I don't really like basil that much, but want to use it somehow. Recipes? Ideas?

orrr, you could just show me pictures of your gardens, that works too :)

Ants can have a purpose. I refuse to pick any of our peonies to bring them inside cause I know how many ants crawl on them. My garden is yet to be planted, we don't plant until late may in my neck of the woods. I have plans to go pick up my tomato plants in less than 2 weeks though!

I was thinking pesto. Maybe I'll try that tomorrow.

I've had stuff planted for about 2 months now.

What are you planting besides tomatoes Nebb?

I have garlic already going from the fall, green onions which I will probably have to reseed cause they aren't doing anything, it got too cool, beans, herbs, carrots, aaaaaaand I think something else but off the top of my head I can't remember lol
  • I wish I could grow carrots! Our soil is really rocky, so growing anything like that is tough.
My green onions are BEASTS right now. They're like 2 feet tall and about an inch thick.

Did you grown your garlic from the cloves?

  • That back pot is green onions.

  • I use basil for brie sandwiches! Stack some on a sliced baguette with cold brie slices and tomatoes. So good.

I'm jealous of your green onions. It said as long as he had no frost at night they'd be ok being planted outside, but I guess it was too cold still. Its warmed up again so I want to see if they still do something but if they havnt in a day or two in seeding again. I do grow garlic from the clove, its so easy and low maintenance!
  • I want to plant some garlic, but we have NO ROOM. We're going to build another planter box soon, so then I can plant some more stuff.

Right now we have 5 kinds of peppers (anaheim, jalepeno, mixed bell, banana, and scotch bonnets. the scotches are just seeds tho), peas, watermelon, cantaloupe, cucumber, eggplant, zucchini, spinach, tomatoes, a bunch of herbs (2 kinds of basil, cilantro, oregano, rosemary, sage, and chocolate mint), green onion, and 2 trees (lemon and orange).

  • That's most of it. We're planning on another box to left of the purple one, on the other side of that tiny tree. We're also planning to rip out a small patch of grass on the other side of the yard to have a space for my watermelons when they get a bit bigger.

  • So bummed that I won't have a garden this year due to the house construction, there's a backhoe where it usually is.   :(

Try sprinkling red pepper flakes around the garden, helps keep the ants and critters out.
