Just Engaged and Proposals

Newly engaged and trying to enjoy it!

I got engaged over the weekend and I keep getting the do you know when, where, what questions. I don't even know where to begin! I know we want 2015 fall on Long Island and that I want to get my ring insured as it was a family heirloom, but besides that I feel like fish out of water. Help? Please

    Congratulations on your engagement!

The first thing you need to do is learn to say, "we're just enjoying being engaged right now, nothing has been decided." It will make your life infinitely easier!!

Aside from that you and your FI should sit down and discuss what kind of wedding you'd both like to have, set a budget and start drafting a preliminary guest list. Once you have these items more settled it will make finding a venue easier because you'll know how many people it needs to fit and how much you can feasibly spend.

  • first of all congrats...second def. go and look at venues...when i got engageed in april of 2012 we knew we wanted Jericho Terrace in LI and visited about 3 weeks late ( 1st week of may) they already had 25 weddings booked for 2014.  Thank Goodness our day MArch 1st 2014 was free.  So as a fellow NY/LI bride venue shop quickly.

As for insurence i went with perfect circle they had the best coverage for the best price.

  • Congrats!  And welcome!

I'm in Jersey and venues around here book up early too.  After the venue search, enjoy it, you have plenty of time.  But def try to come up with a budget first, this way you don't waste your time on venues that are outside of your budget.

  • Congrats! Don't worry about looking at venues right away, you will have plenty of time. After you've been able to just enjoy being engaged for a while and are ready to start planning, make sure you draw up a budget with your FI and then a rough guest list that will fit within that budget (eg if you can only afford to spend 5000 in total it wouldn't necessarily be realistic to try to invite 200 people), and then you can start looking for venues.

For what it's worth, we didn't start actively planning our wedding until this past September (got engaged back in May); the wedding is in April and we haven't really felt rushed at all.
  • Congrats and happy planning!
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • Congrats! This is YOUR moment sister, so enjoy this bliss of the engagement. When people ask say that you plan for a 2015 wedding so you have plenty of time to plan and you are just enjoying the wonderful start of 2013! Don't let the questions get you down. Pretty soon once you start the planning, you will be excited to tell people the plans you are making. Just take things slow for now. My FI and I got engaged December 29th 2011 and our date is June 15th 2013. It goes by fast, but I wish I spent less time worrying about details, and focused more on the fact that I am marrying the man of my dreams. Although, I got many things done early and can now enjoy the last few months, take it slow girl and enjoy the moment!
