NWR...Colonoscopy....make them do it!

Hi everyone.  I just wanted to post this & share my story.  My FI is 52.  Over the past year or so I've been bugging him about getting one (typical guy, hates doctors, tests, etc....).  Finally a month or so ago he had a checkup with his family dr & I brought it up to him.  He agreed, that it's a good idea, so went ahead & scheduled it for us.  Last week he had it done.  The test itself isn't hard on the patient, they're asleep.  I will admit the day-before prep wasn't fun for him, but not THAT big a deal.  Afterwards the dr that did it told us he removed a pretty big polyp & it was normal to send it for a biopsy.  He said no news is good news, his office will only call if it shows something.  Well, they called.  We went in yesterday for the follow-up.  It was precancerous!  He said if we would've waited 6 mos-a year longer to do it he would probably have colon cancer.  I'm now thanking God that I was stubborn on this & made him go.  He'll have to have this checked every year to make sure nothing else grows.
The moral of my story, please have all the men in your life, who are 50 or older have this test done!

Good for you!  Stay stubborn ... its keeping your man in good health.  (((HUGS)))  Thanks for sharing your story.
  • Thanks for sharing!  Make them go!  And girls - get your tests toooooo!
  • Thanks for posting this. I have had 2, one in my 30's when I had a seriously horrendous case of bloody stools (nothing showed up), then again my over-50 last year. The day before IS the toughest, but worth it.

My fiance gets one every 3- 5 years because his brother was diagnosed with colon cancer in his 40's.  If it weren't for his family history, I know he'd be dodging them because he hates addressing stuff with doctors. Once we are married, I'll be going with him to every appointment to make sure all his troubles are addressed. (Like having another kid)
  • Amen, sisters!  I've had a couple myself due to family history.  More funny with the prep than anything and that drug they use (propofonol?) really is low nasty nausea and lingering haze.

I've been bugging my husband about getting one--he's 44 and has family history of colon problems, not cancer--but his doc, who's a gastroenterologist said he can hold off.  He, of course, is taking that to heart.

Do they give you anything for the nausea?  Have them give you something in your iv before you go in, zofran is good if you're not allergic!

  • I just turned 40, FH is 50, and I am making appointments for both of us to have a complete check-up, with the colonoscopy for him and the breast-smasher, er, mammogram for me.  Better safe than sorry!

A lady I work with just found out her 21 year old daughter has stage 4 colon cancer - get checked!  That is a wake-up call.
