Appetizer suggestions...

Ladies! I need your suggestions! We are having a heavy appetizer reception, and after talking with the caterer, they are able to do just about anything we want, not what is just on their menu. While this sounds fantastic, I am a little bit overwhelmed with the idea that I have full range of the menu. She suggested looking at Pinterest or just Googling to find some appetizers I want to try.

We are going to have some passed appetizers (smaller things) during the cocktail hour… and then some at-the-table appetizers to have more of a “meal” with.  Stations just won’t work with venue, but I have though that a mash potato bar or something similar would be fun.  She mentioned they have little shooter glasses if we wanted to do soup shooters, which I think would be fun!

Help me out, show me some delicious food. Thanks!

Re: Appetizer suggestions...

  • These are the ones our caterer suggested (we get to pick 8, or design our own), and they all sound AMAZING:

Ahi Tuna Taco (with cilantro, lime, papaya and avocados)

Miniature beef wellington with tarragon dipping sauce

Scallop Ceviche “shooters” (Traditional Carribbean style ceviche served in a single serving shot glass)

BBQ Duck & Wild Mushroom Quesadilla with Spring Cherry Salsa

Fois Gras “BLT” (An ultra petite open faced sandwich with foie gras, apple smoked bacon, micro lettuce and grape tomato)

Lobster, Plain and Simple (Fresh picked Maine lobster served on an old fashioned wooden tasting fork with drawn butter for dipping)

California Melon Soup “Shooter” (a luscious blend of honeydew, cantaloupe and watermelon, infused with fresh mint and a touch of crème fraiche.  Served cold in a single serving shot glass)

Clam Shooters (a fresh shucked clam, served in a shot glass with spicy cocktail sauce and chilled rum “shot”)

Thai Style Spring Rolls (with sweet and sour dipping sauce)

Asian Vegetable Dumplings with Ponzu Sauce

Speciality Pizza (White pizza with caramelized onions, garlic, olive oil, bleu cheese, and topped with mozzarella

Grilled Shrimp Lollipop with Cilantro Pesto (Served on a lollipopette” filled with tequila lime infusion (like a little tapioca ball filled with tequila lime which squirts when you bite it)

Maytag Blue Cheese Popover (with mango & honey cream)

Baby Lamb Chops (with a dab of demi glaze)

We’re also having a ‘Mediterranean grazing table’ that includes marinated olive medley, vine ripened tomato bruschetta laced with fresh roasted garlic, sundried tomato tapenade with goat cheese, hummus, babaganouj, marinated peppers, and grilled artichoke hearts, all accompanied by fresh baked pita crisps and crostinis.

  • I went to an event that had a mashed potato bar once...amazing. Come to think of it they had the soup shooters too and mini grilled cheese which were super cute. What about some kind of slider for one of the larger appetizers? Maybe I'm thinking too big. I'm bad giving food suggestions because I like it all lol.

  • I also like the idea of an upscale comfort food menu - mac 'n cheese, grilled cheese, BLT, sliders, pizza, mashed potatoes, etc.

    I think I'm going to do 3 seafood, 2 meat, 3 vegetarian!

ETA:  I would really consider, no matter what you decide to serve, making sure you diversify your items.  Consider people who might have issues with certain foods - vegetarians, vegans, gluten allergies, lactose-intolerance, nut allergies, shellfish allergies.  Not that every item has to be for all of those, far from it, but that each of those people will have at least something to eat.  I went to a wedding a few weeks ago with two vegetarians, and they actually left early because they both were starving because there was only one appetizer they could eat (tiny little pastries with cheese in them - good luck to any vegans, right?) and their dinner was approximately 1/4 cup of risotto - they were STARVING!

  • Oh I love baby mac n' cheeses!! We also had a goat cheese and fig crostini thing that was amazing popular, mini croque monsieurs with maple syrup for dipping, and a scallop with pea puree on a "potato chip."

  • Feel free to look at my Pinterest food board. I pin SO much food. A lot of my pins are bite sized things. :) Good luck and let us know what you decide!
