Here Comes The Bride - Somers Point

Hello ladies!

Just wanted to share an awesome experience from today.....I GOT MY DREAM DRESS!!!!!!!

I have been searching for a pre-owned dress, Alfred Angelo #1136, for a while now, refusing to pay the $800 for a new one, plus alterations, etc (serious budget!) I decided I needed to try this dress on to make sure it was the one and also so I knew what size in case I find one pre-owned. So I called HCTB this morning and sure enough Donna had the dress to try on. As we chatted, I told her how I had lost my job and my fiance is struggling as well and what my plan was for this dress. She then cut me off mid sentence asking what size I am...."6" I said and she asked what color I wanted this dress to be. "Ivory." She said, "Oh my god, you need to get her, I have your dress in size 6, in Ivory waiting for you. Its been here for 3 years!" Turns out someone paid half for this dress, had it ordered and never came back to get it....FOR 3 YEARS....ZOMG!!!

I rushed over there by myself and sure enough there it was, still in the package, brand new! I tried it on and it fits me perfectly, no alterations needed! AND THEN I asked her the price....................drum roll please.............$349.......!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I cried and almost knocked her over with a huge hug! I can not believe I found this dress.....or as Donna said, it was mine all along, just waiting for me to come in!

So, please go and visit her shop, it was so worth t for me and she gave me such a gift! And she even offered me a job if I need it. What a sweet soul!

I'm glad you had a good experience and found your dream dress, but I had an entirely different experience. Donna refused to sell me a dress because I am gay.

After spending a day trying on dresses with my family and friends, she called me to say that she didn't realize I was gay and would not work with me because that's "wrong." She also said she was shocked because my family and I seemed so nice, and that my being gay is a "shame." Then, presumably to counter my accusation of discrimination, she said that what I am doing is illegal and she does not engage in illegal activity. I guess she is unaware that civil unions are legal in NJ (where her store is) and same-sex marriage is legal in NY (where I am getting married), and that anyone should be able to buy a wedding dress if they'd like, even if they're single and just want to dress up at home by themselves.

Please do not support this bigot. She is a rude, judgmental, self-righteous homophobe, and from what I've read in other reviews, her bigotry does not stop at gay people. Her listing on Merchant Circle has complaints of racism, ageism, and other forms of degradation and harassment.

Alix, you are a ROCK STAR! I'm so glad you two went to Ronnie with your story. Donna Saber should be asharmed of herself!

For those who don't know the full story:
    http://www.philly.com/philly/columnists/ronnie_polaneczky/20110818_Ronnie_Polaneczky__Store_dresses_down_bride_for_being_a_lesbian.html

Now, the shop had horrible reviews that pre-date the insane appointment that Alix had. Check these out:

Between what people are posting on Google and Yelp, I have a feeling "Here Comes the Bride" isn't gong to be in business much longer.

I personally don't appreciate my post being hyjacked like this. I'm sorry for what happened to you and i don't agree with it. However, I did have a great experience there and continue to do so. Now, because of all this negativity the shop is recieving I have to figure out what to do with my dress that is there. If the store is forced to close, then i may end up loosing my wedding dress. Obviously this situation affects a lot more people than just one.
People make mistakes. It doesn't make them evil monsters. Again, i do not agree with what happened. I too know individuals that have harsh opinions on such topics and have had heated debates over them. HOWEVER, I do not wish them harm or wish they go out of business because of a mistake. All these people commenting on Yelp and other sites are juist being plain nasty. Even if i had not purchased my dress there, i still would not bad mouth a business I have no experience with. It doesn't solve anything to do so, and only makes you look worse in the end. Let Donna appologize.

AG2035: I hope you have a better experience at another shop and find your dream dress. I wish you the best of luck in your future marriage and I'm sorry for the pain this has caused you :)

    OMFG, get over yourself.

You had a great experience because you're straight. You might have to figure out what to do about your wedding dress? Boo hoo, you poor, poor thing.

News flash sweetie, being a bigot isn't a mistake, it's a way of life, and yes, that lady Donna is an evil monster. You say you don't agree with what happened, yet you're still going to support that trashy woman's business. I say if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.

Why should she let Donna apologize? Do you honestly think it would be a sincere apology? More like a desperate attempt to save her own ass is what I'm thinking.

Are you for real? Hatred, bigotry, discrimination are not mistakes. This store should goout of business and you should stope being so selfish.

WOW. So now I'm selfish? Excuse me for also having a wedding and concerns about my dress. So the solution here in this situation to screw every other bride that has a dress in that store? To ruin every other bride's wedding day?? Yeah, that makes sense. I did buy my dress there months ago before all this crap started. So sorry for supporting the business, would you like me to buy another dress from a different store? Would that make you happy? Would that make "part of the solution?" Give me a freaking break. And what would you think if your dress was in this shop? Oh, wait. You'd both wouldn't care about it or what could possibly happen when the wackos come out. You'd be only thinking about the other bride with the unfortunate incident. Right.

Of course you'd call what this other woman is going through "crap" because apparently all you care about is your pretty princess dress.

If I had purchased my dress from that shop I would absolutlely without a doubt cancel my order and shop elsewhere because I like to live my life with higher standards that do not include supporting bigotry.

I hope you feel real special in your hate dress on your pretty princess day.

Honestly, yes. I know that you don't know the poster in question who had the negative experience, but let's say your best friend came to you in tears after being refused service because of who she is. Can you honestly say that your dress would be more important than your friend?

Honestly, when did things become more important than simple human decency?

If you in fact dont agree with the way the shop owner handled the situation, then you shouldnt care about your post being "hijacked". Its called emapathy, and there are some things more important in the world then your own needs. If I were you , I would go and pick up the dress and get alterations else where. The shop owner forever tainted this womans wedding experience , and it was completely uncalled for. As a so called "christian" you should care for all human beings even if you dont agree with their lifestyle. I would never support a biggot, and Im frankly suprised anyoe is defending this woman.

So if she already has money invested in a dress at the store (and possibly a "no refund" policy like many bridal salons) she should just cancel the order and piss away money in the name of someone else's problem? I'm sorry; I think not. How the hell was she supposed to know what would happen MONTHS after she purchased her dress?

It's really hard for anyone with opposing views to open their mind to you when all you do is insult them and put them down. We are all so sorry we don't live to your high standards! If you are expecting such superior behavior from everyone, I would suggest moving yourself to a secluded island. Not everyone is going to be as freakishly passionate about this as you are and you really need to get over it.

@JenGin74: wow, you really sound like a nasty individual. Apparently you're rich too, since you would just go buy another dress and forget about the one you already bought. And I call all of this negativity and attacking "CRAP." Not what happened to Alix. Would you like to buy me a new dress? Please mail me a check for a couple hundred dollars so i can wear a pretty princess dress that's not filled with hate. Come back to reality sweet heart, I bought my dress in january and it's paid for. My dress has nothing to do with this situation.

And further more, I do not know Alix. BUT, I do feel empathy for her situation and what happened to her. And yes, my dress is important. It's my wedding dress. I paid for it. If i had a friend that this happened to i still would not just go and buy another dress. That kind of logic is ridiculous.

Like dragonwagon said, "get over it." And one last thing....

So what's the problem? You paid for your dress back in January. Why did you come to the boards in August to talk about how wonderful this shop was? Did you just do it because of all the negativity the shop is now getting? You're worried somehow the shop will go out of business and your dress won't be available? If that's the concern then go pick the damn thing up.

It still doesn't excuse what this woman did. I cannot believe you would defend someone like this. People like you blow my mind. No sympathy or empathy for what Alix is going through. Would you like it if you had gone in there, ordered your dress, then Donna called you up and said, "Sorry honey I didn't realize you weren't a natural blonde. I'm going to have to cancel your order. I don't sell dresses to fake people."

And Dragon...I almost don't have words for you. I read your posts on SB and just don't understand how people like you exist. Unlike you, I'm of the belief that in order for things to change you have to make some noise. Sitting back and doing nothing won't change anything. Otherwise all of us brides (both past and present) would be relegated to cooking, cleaning, and popping out babies. You know, how things were before women's sufferage?

Doubt it, that woman is an unapologetic bigot, she would have said something to Alix about her partaking in "illegal" actions again. I think the OP was just miffed someone stole her thunder TBH, I don't really see why she had to respond when Alix posted in this thread at all. They had different experiences at the same store, local boards are supposed to give vendors reviews. Potential shoppers at this store can judge for themselves if they want to shop there knowing that the store reputation is forever tarnished by this incident and it may or may not have a serious impact on the business. Defending the shop owner just doesn't look good in this situation, she illegal discriminated against someone in a pretty nasty way. Why would anyonewant to come to her defense?

This is an interesting approach, given your invective of invectives over on SB.

Also, Jen: You rock my socks. Just so you know. :)

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Here Comes The Bride - Somers Point : Sorry dear, I'm not the shop owner. I'm just a normal bride that bought a dress at a nice local shop. Now, all that has changed and I'm going to be a "princess bride of hatred." LOL!

Nothing says "nice local shop" like discrimination and hatred!

I don't think anyone is hung up on the fact that you aren't canceling you dress order. I think people are reacting to your original response. The first sentence was I don't appreciate my post being hijacked. The appropriate response should have been concern for another human being. Yes, your dress is important to you.. I get that. I don't think you keeping your dress makes you a bad person... what is making people jump down your throat is your original reply which came across as insensitive and insincere.
