How many of you opted for the Real ID when you got your new driver's License?

For those of you who don't know, the Real ID Act goes into action in 2014. It means that in order to get into federal buildings, you need a federally mandated ID- not a regular driver's license. Since Driver's Licenses are issued according to state guidelines currently, the Real ID Act allows you to get a Federally Issued Driver's License.

It costs $10 more and requires you to have your birth certificate in addition to the other documents needed to change your name on your license.

The only thing I am not sure on is whether or not once 2014 arrives, only Federally Issued Driver's Licenses will be issued, or whether the state license will be available as well.

DH is against this whole thing, and is encouraging me to not do it, because of the likelihood that this whole thing will be redone/repealed. We do not have passports, but are getting them this coming year.

Thoughts, everyone?!

It is 3 years away, seems dumb to me... and what kind of building would you need to be going into that would need this??

I would just get a regular DL. I'm sure when (if) this is enacted, there will be phasing/grandfathering to allow everyone time to transition.

And, like B2B said, where do you go that you need clearance for fed buildings

Any Federal building.

Not sure what those entail, but being as how the family business deals with the gov't at times, I don't want to risk it.

Also, if I ever want to take my kid on a tour of the Pentagon, White House, anything down in DC, I will need a Real ID.

It also means boarding a commercial aircraft will require a Real ID, from the research I can find.

If you ever need to go to a federal court house, for whatever reason, you will need a Real ID.

Yeah, I meant to ask that too the other day. What buildings are you going in to to need this? I mean, I'm not one to talk, because the buildings I frequent (Starbucks, Target and Babies R Us) aren't likely to make me need them to get in.:) If banks are going to need them, then sure. If they get repealed, what's another $10? I mean, in the grand scheme of things, if it's going to be neccessary for the ID, then you might as well get it. If it gets repealed, then you'll switch back. It could take years to get it done. At least you'd be ahead of the rush to get it done in 3 years.

Social Security Offices, most buildings in DC, etc. Nothing everyday, unless you work with gov't or if they include USPS (which would be dumb, but whatever).

Playing the little devil on your shoulder... if H's family biz didn't rush to get you insurance as promised (which is a reflection of their priorities and efficiency), and you seem to be better health wise, do you still see yourself working there in 3 years?

Hil- Insurance kicked in Jan 1. Though that's a whole nother b!tch fest, because of what FIL did behind DH's back re: insurance.

If it doesn't go into effect until 2013, I would wait. A license is only valid for 4 years so you will only have one possible year of needing a real id.

Would you be able to use a passport? If you plan on getting one before 2014, I wouldn't spend the extra $10 on the Real ID license.

Seriously. It's $10. And bringing your birth certificate. You'll be covered if you need to get in to any of these buildings for any reason. Just get it. Seriously. Like I said- if it gets repealed, then you'll either have the RealID or you'll go switch back. I'd rather have it done ahead of time than be running around last minute trying to get one. Although- you've said before that you won't be flying anymore because of the TSA scans. You also can't stand how your DH's family treats you guys at their company- so if you look for something different, this license may not be necessary. If you were working in a courthouse? Airport? No hesitation. Go for it. But realistically, if you're not going to use it, then don't get it.

Me? I'll get it. Just because it's something new. But I'm a dork.

Is this the new license in DE that started in July? If it is I just had moved down here then and waited until July to switch my NY one over. I didnt need to bring in my birth certificate. I think I did need 2 forms of id and proof of address or something along those lines. Also I thought that in DE you had to switch over by next year to the new id no if ands or buts about it. Aka they didnt give you a choice. But thats just what I heard not anything I read.

Either way I am with paprika just get it cause honestly why is it a big deal? its a license it just has extra abillities. Sorry I just dont understand why your DH is against it.

And when I went for my new driviers license with the name change a few weeks ago they didn't even mention the option of a Real ID

If in 2014 it becomes necessary to do things- then I'll spring for the extra 10 bucks and get one

As of Jan 1 2010, Maryland began issuing REAL ID compliant driver's licenses. You didn't get a choice. In fact, I didn't even know I had a REAL ID compliant card until I looked it up on the MVA website.

As far as Maryland goes, if you were born after 12/1/64, your regular MD state id is valid for federal purposes up until Dec 1 2014. If you were born before 12/1/64 you have until Dec 1 2017. After those dates , your MD driver's license or ID card will not be accepted unless it is REAL ID compliant.

I will probably get a Real ID. I spend a lot of time in federal court (federal court = federal buildings). If I have to switch back, it's no big deal. But, I'll deal with it when the time comes.

Also, currently PA is one of 28 states opposing the REAL ID due to privacy and funding concerns. So I don't think they're any where near even ready to begin offering them.

so my current ID is fake?!?

I had to get a new drivers license in August because it expired and then two weeks ago for name change. Nothing was mentioned to me of a real ID.

You don't have to get a new MD id/license until it expires. At that time, they'll just give you the new compliant one.

I moved to MD last year, after they already began issuing the compliant ids. In order to get the MD license I needed
-my old PA license
-1 source of age (birth certificate or passport will work)
-Social security card
-2 sources of MD residency (mortgage, rental contract, utility bill, etc.)

Mmm... I have never heard of this, and I'm a Federal Employee. Until I get massive amounts of emails from work telling me to get it, I wouldn't... so I'm sure you can do the same.

Couldn't you just use your passport in said cases? That's what I'll go with I would think.

All though over all I don't see what the big deal is, maybe because I have a visa which I had to have all my finger printed and have an eye scan which was imprinted on an ID card which I have to carry around with me. Annnnnd I had a pay a shiiit ton of cash money for that something like $3000 total and I need a new one this summer and I will need to pay for that as well. Plus then I will need to pay for citizenship the summer afterwards.

Crazy - I've never heard of this! Though I can see why considering what PA apparently thinks about it!

If it were me, I wouldn't get it - but if you want to , go ahead! I don't think it should be a source of any disagreement between you an DH. It's $10 and really not a huge deal.

And yes, your passport does interchange with this.

FYI, from what I found out at the DMV: by 2014, you will have to have this if you are even thinking about flying domestically. So, B2B, there is your answer- if it does go thru, you will need one!

Paprika- hopefully, because they are already making changes/because of lawsuits, by the time 2014 rolls around I will be able to fly. Trust me, we follow that ish reeeeal closely.

Yup!

But we don't have passports yet, so that was part of the dilemma. We are getting them this year- with family members traveling overseas that we are next of kin for, it's just safer.

Soooo I guess it solves that.

FYI, from what I have read, while states are disputing the Real ID act, like PA, it doesn't mean that the Federal Buildings and Domestic Flying won't require federal issued forms of ID for those things still (that's going on the basis that it won't be repealed or changed). It just means now that those states Driver's Licenses won't count as a Federal ID, and you will need a Passport to do those things.

From what I read on Maryland's DMV - the only difference is a sercurity mark on your ID that means you passed the "extensive" check. And I guess since I have a Fed ID already is why I haven't heard it yet. I think it is just to get all states on the same page to prove not just you live in that state, but a US citizen...

Bingo, you said it. Not to mention that state IDs are all over the place- there is no one identifying mark, they can be replicated (fake IDs) too easily, etc, etc- so they wanted to make it easier to identify and all for federal purposes, since not everyone has a passport and can afford a passport.

The problem is, most states are contesting it because it too "big brother" like. Which is why DH is not keen on the whole idea- as are alot of other people.
