vera wang

I am a married male, and my wife is letting me fulfill a lifelong fantasy and purchase a wedding gown for myself.  It started out with the intent that I would go to a local dress shop and try to find a reasonable dress.  Now, my lovely wife has suggested I make myself an appointment at Vera Wang Chicago.  She wore Vera Wang when we got married, and she knows how much I loved her dress and Vera Wang in general.

Can anyone give me some insight as to a price range for Vera Wang gowns?  Is it worth the expense?  My wife wants me to find my dream dress and live out my fantasy.

Thanks for the input everyone!

Re: vera wang

  • IMHO, it depends how "into" designers you are.  When I was shopping for my dress, it was more important to me to spend as little as possible.  To my understanding, Vera is pretty expensive.  I don't see the harm in going in to try stuff on, though.  If it turns out to be too expensive for you, at least you get to say you got to try one on. :)

  • I think it's crazy how expensive a dress is once it's considered a wedding gown.  I had a Vera Wang prom dress/bridesmaid dress that was under $300 and it was beautiful.  I know it's a lot less material and different fabrics, but IMHO, wedding gowns are overpriced.

If you're dead set on Vera Wang and are willing to fork over the money, then go for it.  If not, there are gorgeous gowns out there that don't come with quite the hefty price tag.  Good luck though and keep us posted on your search Smile

I'm sorry I couldn't be more help with numbers.
  • I don't know about the Vera store, but the Vera Line at David's can be anywhere between 1-2k.

  • Also, what if I make an appointment, try on gowns, and end up not buying my dress there?  I'll feel bad that they've spent their time with me, especially as a male.  Is this something I should even be concerned about?

Absolutely not. You're a customer and not all customers buy.  I went to four bridal salons and I'm definitely not getting four dresses.  Sometimes with a great consultant you want them to get the commission, but they know that if a dress isn't for you, then you'll look elsewhere.
  • OK.  That's good to know.  I really do want to see how her gowns will look on me.
  • I used to work in retail, and one of the "stats" we learned was that only about 30-35% of people that walk through the doors will buy something. Surely the bridal consultants will be aware of that either from being told, or from their own experience.

That being said, I wouldn't walk in and say to them "ya, so I'm not planning on buying one of your dresses, I just wand to play dress-up." If I were the consultant, that would make me really annoyed.

  • I agree.  I would definitely not make an appointment just to "play dressup" if I knew I wasn't going to buy.  I just wanted to get a feel for if it was ok to make an appointment if I wasn't 100% sure.  I definitely respect the time and effort involved with helping a bride choose her gown.
