What can we register for?

I'm sure this question has been brought up several times, but I'm not sure what is appropriate to register for.  My fiance and I have lived in our respective apartments for years, so we most of the cookware and don't plan on asking for china, crystal vases, or anything like that.

Is it appropriate to register for things like electronics (iPod, printer), decor (book case, shelving), and things like that?  What was the most off the wall thing you registered for?

I think household decor is fine for a registry and electronics are debatable. We registered for a blu ray player because we figured it was something we both would use and we would also use it when we have guests. I have seen cameras as suggested registry items. We also registered for board games, thinking that they would be nice to have for entertaining guests. To me, registering for things that will entertain guests is like registering for china. My rule of thumb for registry items is that they have to be usable by both of us (The exception is bakeware- that's really for me since FI doesn't cook, but I guess he could use it if he wanted to). There is a sticky at the top of the registry board with ideas of things to register for when you don't know what to put on a registry.

I second the sticky at the top of the registery board. It is very helpful. We registered for tools, that was probably something that I think is off the wall just because it's not typical but it's nice for FI to have something to look forward to.

Are you happy with the quality/style of your cookware, towels, bedding, dishes etc?  We already had all of the things we "needed" but a lot of the stuff was cheaper stuff we got when just starting out so we registered for nicer versions of those things.  Also, if there are some housewares type things you are planning on registering for, you could always register for dishes and then return them for a higher ticket item that you might want after the wedding...

FI and I each owned our own homes for several years prior to getting engaged and moving in together at his place.  All of my stuff sits in a "POD" on our driveway right now.  We know that we both have nice things, and were wondering the same questions?  What to register for when we don't want China?

Like pp said, we have decided to upgrade our everyday things.  I mean who doesn't love new fluffy bath towels, and super nice sheets?  :)  We've also decided to upgrade our cookware as ours are a few years old, although they are still usable.

Maybe even look into obscure serving dishes/glassware... BB&B has a few super cute serving trays (3-tier, chips/dip, bread warmers, etc) and Crate has some adorable fun glassware for entertaining, as well.

We had everything too, but registered for new stuff and handed down the older things.  We had a bunch of old serving spoons that were getting a little warn and got all new ones!  It was fantastic.  We also got nice sheets and new hand towels.  It was nice to have everything match too.  when you guys move in together, you'll have a mismatch of different things.

We are doing the Foodie Registry (http://www.foodieregistry.com/).  We have Amazon as well - helpful for all kinds of things.  My coworker told me that Home Depot has a registry site so that may be something you might want to look into too.

We've lived together for almost 5 years, so we do have a lot of stuff already.  There's some stuff that I purposely didn't buy when we moved in together, such as towels.  I'm still using my 25-year-old childhood set, so that's ready for an upgrade!  Also, when we moved in together (it was the first time for either of us living outside of our respective parents' houses, other than college) I didn't buy a really nice crock pot or blender or hand mixer- just the $20 ones from Target, so I'm getting nicer stuff now.  I'll just hand down my old stuff to my sister.

The "craziest" thing we registered for was a couple of Lego sets; we're both into Frank Lloyd Wright and architecture, so they have a couple of FLW Lego sets.  Also, we registered for some board games.

I was told that your registry is your ultimate wish list. You can put anything you want on there. Our most off-the-wall thing we registered for was a keg-o-rater. We decided to take it off because we were getting a lot of laughs about it. =) But we put a video camera on there and someone got it for us! I've also had friends register at Home Depot and get all their tools that way.

We are having this same  issue - we have lived together for 6 years and own a condo together.

Even though we have everything for the kitchen, we are still registering for some new stuff that we're picking out together (cookware, knives, nice wine glasses, a new set of dishes - even though our other ones are fine!)

We don't need sheets, towels, etc but like others said, it's nice to have new so we'll probably ask for some towels.

I'm going to look into the Foodie registry too!

We registered for some high end serving items (Nambe, etc) to have for entertaining guests over the years. I figure that stuff will last forever, so it will be nice to have it from our "wedding".

You could also register for some nice luggage.

These have been great suggestions - I didn't even think of the video camera!  Should we try and keep our registry down to 2 places?  Some of the ideas would call for us to register at like 4 or 5 different places.

    Thanks!!

I've heard people say to stick to 2 or 3 registeries - but really, what does it matter? I think as long as one of them is a major one (Bed Bath Beyond, Macy's, etc) then why not register at a few of the other ones? That's what we are going to do :) We'll probably have like 5 places but oh well.
