St. Thomas Wedding

Hi! I am newly engaged, from Pittsburgh, and my fiance and I have decided to get married in St. Thomas. Does anyone have recommendations for particular resorts/beaches/hotels? My family is Catholic and wants us to get married in a church, however we want to get married on the beach. Any thoughts on a priest performing the ceremony on the beach? I have heard great things about the Frenchman's Marriott. Any other tips about how to go about planning a destination wedding would be greatly appreciated! Sealed

Re: St. Thomas Wedding

  • I live on St. Thomas and I would suggest Wyndham Sugar Bay.  The Marriott is nice too but I prefer the Wyndham.  As for a catholic priest marrying you on the beach, I don't think you will find one that will.  As far as I know, a catholic priest will only marry you in the church.  The island is probably about 95% catholic so finding one won't be the problem, but finding one to marry you on the beach might be hard.
  • Hi & welcome,

I am also a St Thomas bride, we are getting married May 2011. We chose Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort, it looks beaiutiful!

    Good luck planning!

  • Hi,

I am getting married in July in St Thomas.  We are both Catholic and getting married in a church.  The Catholic church will not recognize a wedding outside of the church so a priest won't marry you on the beach.  I am using Janelle from Island Bliss Weddings and she has been very helpful.  Good luck.
  • There have been several past brides on here who got married at the Wyndham Sugar Bay and their weddings looked absolutely beautiful.
And you won't be able to find a priest who will marry you on the beach (at least not one recognized by the catholic church).
  • Hi and welcome! I'm getting married in St. Thomas in July of 2011 at the Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort.  After looking up a bunch of wedding reviews on both the Wynham and Mariott I just happen to notice the Mariott had a few more poor wedding reivews than the Wyndham so thats why we chose one over the other.  Wherever you choose to have it I'm sure it will be beautiful and amazing! Good luck planning!

  • Thank you everyone for your advice!!! It has been helpful. I am going to research a few other resorts, especially the Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort. For the brides to be, are you nervous about planning everything remotely? Since I have not visited St. Thomas (just decided on it based on word of mouth)  I wonder how all of the details, picking a theme, flowers, centerpieces, reception venues, etc. can all come together when I live so far away! Do you recommed visiting the resort I choose before the wedding?

Also, my other main concern is my budget. Although I am planning to have a smaller guest list, 20-30, I am worried that my destination wedding might be more expensive than in my hometown. Any thoughts, suggestions?

Thank you all again for your help! Cool
