Birth Control Question

Hey guys, has anyone on here ever been on previously, or currently are taking Seasonale? I am just 1 month into it, and am having some MAJOR acne issues... just wondering if anyone on here has had a similar situation? I have never had acne problems like this before, not with any previous birth control... and I can't be dealing with this for the wedding, NO WAY!

My best friend is on it and hasn't had problems but like anything it probably effects everyone differently

Maybe it's stress and not the BC?

If it doesn't go away I'd ask your dr. if it's a common thing... and if there's another one you can take that doesn't have the same side effects!

Acne is nooooo fun ever, but especially when you're gearing up for a wedding ;-P

I know you weren't looking for BC advice, but I love the Nuva Ring so much I feel obligated to promote it haha More effective than the pill because it's SO EASY

No forgetting about it! And I've had zero side effects.

I currently take it, but my body can't handle 4 periods a year so I do 6. I had all kinds of awful side effects. However, acne wasn't one of them. I had issues like vaginal dryness/itching. Once I switched to 6 periods a year instead of 4 everything got totally better! I would suggest you call your doctor and talk to her about it.

I can't imagine just having 4 periods a year. It doesn't seem healthy or natural... I would be terrified about the side effects later in life or while trying to conceive. Yes, I know they say your body doesn't need more than 4 periods a year, but medicine has been very very wrong in the past... My 2cents anyway.

I use nuva ring.

I agree with futuregabriel, I'd give it a little longer and if it doesn't clear up, let your doctor know. I was on the pill for a long time but couldn't remember it everyday so I went to the Nuvaring. I loved it, but it killed my libido so I'm on nothing now. But thanks fo rreminding me... I have to talk to a doctor and get back on it, because my periods are killing me... =/

I was one seasonique for a few years and then on seasonale for a few. Probably 7 years total. Found out after I stopped taking it last year that one of its known side effects is making acne flare up worse in people who are prone to it. I have been off it for a year and I am finally getting my acne back under control again! Yazmin is supposed to be better for acne, but I do miss only having 4 periods a year!

I'm on it (seasonique), (my CNP said seaonale is going away, she hasn't had it in years and everyone is switching to Seasonique) and have been on (seasonale) it previously and I honestly love it. I was taking Beyaz and had HORRIBLE side effects and when I talked to my CNP about it she took me off straight away. They usually tell you to take a full pack of 2 and see if they go away. You can also get on their website and look over their symptoms and see if what you are experiencing is normal or not. I've been on every from of BC except the implanon(?) and the patch and I came back to seasonique and I couldn't be happier. Check the site for info and if that doesn't clear it up call your docotor. My body goes through hell for a couple months every single time I change bc. This includes terrible acne. If, however, you don't usually have that, I'd definitely talk to a dr about switching. I usually give mine 2 months before I really know how my body is going to feel. I'm with the Nuvaring lovers, though. It was the best form of bc I've ever had. My dr. recently took me off of all estrogen bc because she was worried about blood clots, though.

I switched to a progesterone only pill, and it's suuuuuucked.

Different birth controls have different amounts of hormones in them, your body also has it's own balance of hormones and it's different from my balance. You need to find the BC that balances you out. When I was on some pills, I had horrible cramps that made it so that I couldn't work, off of the pill I had horrible cramps as well. I finally got onto the NuvaRing and finally, for the first time since I was 19, I'm able to have cramp free periods (now I just need my body to stop spotting! Hopefully soon, it's been spotting for a month!). So what I'm trying to say is that even though BC SHOULD help with acne, cramps etc, it'll only do so if your on a type of BC that doesn't further unbalance your hormones.

The first pill I was on caused me to break out as well, I felt like I was back in middle school. The hormones in that pill in general were all wrong for me, and I found out later (when I went to a new doctor) that this was one of the older versions of the pill that are still on the market, why they would give me a pill that has 35 mg of hormones in it when it's the first time I've ever put artificial hormones into my body, I will never know. According to my doc, it takes 3 months for your body to figure out the new hormones, so you may not have acne in 3 months, but for me, I was on pill 1 for a year (just figuring that all pills would have the same effect on my body, I even told the nurse that I didn't need to try anything new, but there was a spot on the sheets that I filled out that asked if I had any negative side effects from the pill I was currently on, when I listed them, she told me that I should have never have put up with all of that for a full year), and the side effects only got worse.

If you think your doctor is great, if he/she spends a lot of time with you, explains everything in detail, requires a pap smear, takes your budget into consideration etc, then stick with him/her. If not, find someone new to go to. I volunteer at an abortion clinic and one day was sitting at a women's rights meeting with the abortion doctor. After the meeting was over, I pulled her to the side and explained to her my history with BC, I told her that I desperately wanted to stop using over-the-counter birth control but really needed a doctor who would review my old pills and the hormones in them and then recommend something new. First, she got me onto a program that would give me a free appointment with her and free BC. Then, she gave me an hour long appointment (all of that time with her, not in the waiting room), we talked about everything from STDs to ovulation, good/bad times of the month, hormone levels etc. It was great. She said that she wanted me to try the NuvaRing for at least 3 months as it had the least amount of the hormones that generally cause cramps, thank goodness that I haven't had one cramp (minor or major) for two months now!

All of this long, long post is to say that you need to gather up all of the info you have on old BC that you used, I made notes on each one and why I did/did not like it. If the doctor you see is trying to push you out the door, then you need to find someone new.

Furthermore, go to google and type in "Family Planning Medicaid (your state)" and look into what pops up, it could save you a bit of money.

And as one final responce before I peace from this thread, is that I'm really glad to see how populer the NuvaRing is. According to Ms. Magazine, the NuvaRing had a really small budget back in the days of it's creation/early advertisements, because market research showed that not many people would be interested in it. However, it has now taken off and is doing much better then anyone ever expected. A few pro's of the NuvaRing:

-It has an extra week of hormones in it, so if you're, say, getting married, just leave it in an extra week, no big.

-It's always in unless your having sex or on your period. It can be out for up to 3 hours per day. The rest of the time, it's relieaseing hormones, which are released slowly through heat (so in other words, if you pick up your BC a few days before you need to use it, store it in your fridge. Yup, you just read that right). So you never have to worry about a pill pack mixing up the pills (remember that BC recal a few months back?) or taking it at any set time, bc the hormones are slowly released though out the day. This also means that your not popping and sorting all of the hormones at once.

-It has no taste (so don't worry about your man going down on you) and you can't feel it when it's inside of you.

-It's easy to put in, easy to take out

-You can wash it off whenever you want. A note to remember, it releases hormones through heat, so take it out before you get in your steamy shower, not while your in there, and rince in cold water.

-It has less hormones then any pill out there, yet is just as effective (and more effective for me, bc I always had a hard time remembering to take that silly pill at a set time)

-Do you normally take your pill at 9 pm? Out at dinner and don't want to pull out a pack or hormones in front of mom and pops? No problem. It's the NuvaRing, it's in, it's working, the time of the day has no effect on it.

Looks like after yesterday this birth control might not be for me at all, and infact my Dr is now not sure what is until tests are done today. I spent much of yesterday in the emergency department, after being told to get to the nearest one asap. My left leg is sore, numb foot, and swollen in the foot and ankle. They believe I might have a blood clot, and their only explanation for why is the BC. Looks like I might be one of the few that they warn about all the time. I go back today for an ultrasound on the veins in my leg. Yesterday they gave me an injection of a blood thinner, and pending todays results we'll continue the injections if need be.

Wow, I am so sorry to hear the update! That is something I've always been worried about, being a hypochondriac on BC and I'm sure it must be very scary. I hope everything is okay and you have a fast recovery!

Wow, how scary! Take care of yourself and I hope you feel better soon. Hopefully getting off of it will solve those problems and you can find something new. It's pretty scary when the warning lable comes true :-/

iparli, I do hope that I don't spot for months! I put in my new ring on Monday and didn't spot at all yesturday... I must say that I wouldn't make it past another month or so... FI and I don't have sex when I'm bleeding as it makes him squeemish, I hate to admit that last month was a very, very long month for us. On the plus side, I now know that we can go without sex for a month ;-).
