Is a MUA REALLY necessary?

I'm so torn! I had an airbursh makeup trial this past weekend and while I really did like how it turned out, the cost is so much! I have to pay for me and at least 4 girls, plus travel costs, so I'm looking at $700 minimum just for makeup application. While I could wiggle some room in the budget for this, is it really that necessary? My other option is having my sister/MOH do it. She's really really good and I figured if I buy quality products, it should be fine. My fiance' thinks my sis should do it to, he likes her work..but I'm worried that by the end of my August outdoor wedding my face will be on the floor!

Any of you ladies do your own makeup? Did it disappear by the end of the day? Any really good long-lasting products you can recommend?

Thanks!

Re: Is a MUA REALLY necessary?

  • I don't think it's necesary.  I'm going to ask FI's aunt to help me.
  • I have looked at having a MUA vs. doing it myself or a friend/relative doing it. I really like the airbrush effect, and the fact that it does last throughout the day. I posted a question earlier about makeup b/c I'm getting married in Jamaica (humidity!), and the resort does not do airbrush. Several posters recommended an item carried at Sephora by Christian Dior called Air Flash. It's an airbrush that you can apply yourself. I was also told that if you go into the actual store rather than buying it online, the MUA there will give you a free lesson on how to apply it. (One of my posters actually went back several times for a "free" lesson until she got it right. :-)) She also recommended using a HD Powder that helps further refine the look.

I am going to look into it, and have my sister/MOH give it a try on me. She is already doing my hair, and our run through went great! Ours is a pretty low stress wedding, but I made sure that she was comfortable doing it for me. I don't want her to be too stressed out about it. So, if you have your MOH do your hair/MU, make sure she is not going to stress! My BM's are all doing their own hair/make up because they all have their own styles (very short to very long) and want to do their own.

[QUOTE]Your siggy pic is really big. I am all about a bride feeling the most beautiful she has ever felt on her wedding day.  How you accomplish that is up to you.  Professional wedding hair and makeup is expensive, period.  I made sure I included it in my budget from the beginning.  For me, it was worth every penny--I wanted to look fabulous and I knew I couldn't achieve the look I wanted on my own.  Plus I wanted to be pampered and didn't want the stress of doing it myself.  I looked as good in my last picture of the night as my first.  So I would say it's totally worth it. That being said, there are plenty of girls out there that have done or are doing their own.  You will just need to decide if it's worth it to you or not.  Personally, I wouldn't have your MOH do it--there is alot of stress going on while getting ready and she would have to do everyone's makeup plus get ready herself and while she might be willing, she may not realize how stressful that will be. Another option would be to have a MUA do your hair and makeup and then have your BMs do their own.

  • I just did my own makeup.  Then, if it didn't end up right, I had no one to blame but myself!
  • I don't want to get one for my girls, all the artists I have found require a minimum of me and at least 4 girls due to wedding season....so thats why its adding up...

I think I am going to have my sister do just my makeup. The BMs will do theirs and since we will all be getting ready together we can help eachother out and have some fun! I'll check into that Dior airbrush makeup....thanks

  • I had a friend do ours, she was awesome and we all looked great.
  • NO a makeup artist is not necessary. it is also definitely not necessary to provide one for your BMs. personally I think they're a waste of money. everyone has at least one friend who is good at applying makeup. if you have a friend who is good with makeup (esp if she's a BM herself) or you are good at makeup, it is definitely doable to skip the makeup artist. I'm doing my own and my mom and sisters' makeup on the day of.

  • I had one, but I just went to a local beauty school the day of and got it done. She was great and cheap. I suck at make-up, and I don't have nice, high quality products, so it was kinda nice not to have to worry about it.

That said, if it'd been a lot of money, I wouldn't have gotten it done.

  • I ran into the same issue, with the minimum of 4 people and only one of my BMs wanting makeup.  I decided that a) i'm not great at makeup myself since I don't wear too much to begin with and b) I want to get airbrush so it will last all day, so I'm paying for myself, and paying for my mom and MOH as a gift... It's a lot of $$ but my feeling was, we are spending a lot on the wedding, and I want to look my best for the day.  That said, if you have someone who can do a good job, and you feel confident in her (maybe do a "trail" first) then go for it...
