Opinions on dress for bride - what is appropriate?

Hello-

I've been in a relationship for 6 years (long story!) and we have a child together.  We are planning a simple, intimate wedding and I'm wondering what kind of dress would be appropriate to wear - as the bride.  I'm not interested in wearing a white wedding gown...but that's all I've got as far as ideas!  It really doesn't have to be a wedding gown, but something elegant yet simple.  What colors are acceptable?

Thank you!!

  • Anything is acceptable - it's your wedding and you are definitely not relegated to wearing white by any means.  What is your favorite color(s)?  Why not find something in that and go from there.  Many department stores should have a large selection.. GL!

  • Shooot.. all colors are acceptable!!! I am a new bride, with no kids (yet!) and Im not even wearing white haha. My gown is ivory, because it looked the best in Ivory. Tradtionally you don't wear white if you are not a virgin (but come on now, times have changed ; ).... So go with what you want. In my opinion I would just say make sure the girls are covered up... and thats the only rule. Go with what dress you love that is simple and elegant like you want! And if you want color.. thrown in that colored sash.. or part of the back/train have a little color! You'll look gorgeous either way!!

My gown is not white, or even ivory (pic in profile).  Go with something that makes you happy.  If that's a white dress then so be it.  If it's something non-traditional, I'm all in favor of that too...it's your special day so I think brides should wear what will make them feel beautiful.

Although I agree about covering the girls.Embarassed
  • Why not look at bridesmaid dresses?  On both DB's and AA's websites, you can see the dresses, and then see them in alternate colors.  A simpler, yet still lovely dress might be exactly what you're looking for.
"Trix, it's what they/our parents wanted. Why so judgemental? And why is your wedding date over a year and a half ago? And why do you not have a groom's name? And why have you posted over 12,000 posts? And why do you always say mean things to brides?" palegirl146

J Crew has some simple, lovely gowns.  Many come in white or ivory only, but several styles come in other colors.  They have long gowns and many shorter options, as well.

I agree with pps - look at bridesmaid dresses (in white/ivory if that's what you want or in colors!), they're often simpler and beautiful!

  • I am going with red.  It is making it harder, but I found one I like.  I really want to try on a few others, but there just arent that many dresses in red!!!
  • For her second wedding my mom wore a very pretty blue suit.  Not a buisness suit, she got it in a special occaison shop.  I think it was intended as a MOB dress but it worked.

<div>Watters & Watters has a line of special occasion gowns/suits.  I find them to be a bit more sophisticated than many bridesmaid dresses, but they're not your typical MOB/MOG dress/suit.  </div>

  • Personally, a white dress with colors but not all is perfect for you.

  • Don't skip the big white dress just because you think you're not "supposed" to wear it. I've been with FI for 6 years. We've lived together for 5. And we're still doing the whole shabang, and I'm wearing an awesome white dress. Many women these days are already moms by the time they get married - it doesn't mean you can't have the wedding you want. Dont' let anyone tell you otherwise. Now if you just don't like white wedding dresses, feel free to look around. Some wedding gowns come in color [I've seen blues and pinks]. Other than that, just look at stores for formal gowns that you like. You can wear whatever you want! :)
  • I say wear whatever you think looks best on you - anything is appropriate.  I am wearing silver, and my partner is wearing red.
  • I agree, with most of the people here that say where whatever you feel comfortable in. If you don't want white or ivory but still want somewhat of a "bridal" feel, champagne is a great alternative. A lot of desigeners are making "little white" dresses too, if you didn't want a traditional longer dress.
  • I would choose whatever color you feel prettiest in?  It doesn't have to be white or bridal for that matter!
  • It sounds like a bridesmaid style might be perfect for you. These dresses are generally simpler than bridal gowns, but still elegant, and come in many colors. MOB and prom are also options, depending on the type of style you prefer. Most stores that carry one carry them all.

You could also look at regular department store gowns, especially if you think you might like something in a print. Depending on your taste and the time of year, a floral print dress might look really nice.

There are also a lot of bridal gowns now that have hints of color in them. I forget who, but there's a designer with a whole line of color-accented gowns. I don't know if that option appeals to you, but it's out there.
