Different religions

Help! Religion is not really a problem with my bf and I. He is aware that I was brought up with a mixed family. My mother's side is Catholic and my father's side is Mormon. I was brought up Mormon and even though I am not Catholic I respect it and feel part of it as well. My bf is Catholic and he respects my religious beliefs. Now that we are planning on getting married I want a religious wedding. I am willing to convert and become a Catholic, as I would never ask him to convert. Is it wrong for me to convert just because I want a religious wedding? And if not? What steps do I need to take to marry as a Catholic?

Re: Different religions

  • You don't have to convert in order to have a Catholic ceremony.  Only one of you has to be Catholic.  You just wouldn't be able to do a full mass.

  • You would have to go to a marriage preparation class before you marry in the Catholic church. You should contact your Fi's priest to discuss whether or not you want to convert, but that would not be a requirement for marriage. You should do this before you set the date because there's usually a 6 month or longer wait for a wedding ceremony.
