Other random thing about DS

We think he may be color blind. I have several male cousins on my mom's side of the family that are color blind. He has the hardest time with colors- he'll just call everything orange or blue. Which is normal, but I mentioned it to DH who then freaked out like it was something horrible. So we did a color blindness test for kids- they are supposed to see shapes like a star or a circle. DS definitely knows shapes and when we showed it to him all he said he saw was dots (which is what the picture is made of). It's totally unscientific and DH probably administered it wrong, but I'm sort of intrigued.

Re: Other random thing about DS

  • This runs in DH's family.  He doesn't have it, but his father is totally color blind.

It's weirdly interesting to talk to FIL about it.

  • I have LONG said that Des has red/green colorblindness. He has known his colors for at least a year, but he has consistently screwed up red and green in that time. And he still does (he'll be 3 in less than 3 weeks).

I've wanted to try the shape tests on him, but we just haven't been sure it would work. (He knows his numbers, too, so we could probably do the "real" ones.)

When I brought it up to the pediatrician, probably a year ago, he dismissed it and said, 'eh. 2yo's aren't likely to have their colors straight yet." I couldn't dismiss the possibility, and at the time it would have been even tougher to test, but I was pretty pissed at his dismissal. Hello?! I just told you the kid knows every other damn color there is.

So, I guess we'll see.  I'm intrigued that you did the test. I might go ahead and try it.

  • I love talking to my cousins. Now that they are married, their wives have to organize the closet. They have certain colored shirts in certain areas and they have tabs noting that these are red shirts, etc. That way they don't pull out mismatched clothes.
  • DG, all I did was pull it up and ask him what he saw. He definitely has issues with red/green. He knows that red lights mean stop and that green lights mean go- but if you show him a picture of somethign red he'll just get confused.

All DH did was pull up the chart and ask him what shapes he saw. DH did lead him a bit by telling him that shapes were things like circles, squares, etc. All DS saw was "dots".
  • You know, the thought has run through our minds with DD1.  FIL is colorblind and DH is a bit as well.

DD1 screws up her colors all the time, but I'm not going to get myself worked up yet.  It's very possible she just doesn't have them straight right now.
  • My dad has issues to varying degrees, but it's not true color blindness.

6let passed his eye exam with flying colors.  At least he got that from his dad.

  • The weird thing is there's no colorblindness in either family. So I'm still holding out hope that I'm wrong.

But man, he's all "Where is my red airplane?" and I'm all confused because I don't think we have a red airplane. Sure enough, when we found it, it was green. He also very consistently screws up when we read "Red Hat, Green Hat" by Sandra Boynton. Lots of other instances, too.

HaHa one of my friend's ex boyfriends was so incredibly colorblind. His mom and him used to fight over his poor clothing choices when he was like 14 I guess because she'd always have to buy his stuff for him, he'd never choose. So she gave him the money and sent him on his way and he came home to show off what he'd bought. Pink pants and an orange shirt. He saw them as different shades of a normal color. So, he figured out he was color blind then. We'd be eating peppers (like grilled) and they'd be green, orange, red, yellow. He'd say I like the dark pink one, and the orange one, and light pink one haha
