New bride!!

Hi everyone!!! I am a new bride to be in the DFW area, and wanted to reach out to this wonderful community! I just signed up to The Knot, and everything seems very overwhelming so far! I still feel like this is all a dream! :)

Does anything have any good recommendations of apps/websites to check out? Or contests or anything? I already created an entirely new email for planning, and the diet is on track!

I don't have sisters or a mom, so I'll be planning everything :) If anybody has any helpful suggestions, I'd love to hear!

Thank you everyone! <3

Re: New bride!!

  • Congrats on your engagement and welcome to the board!

What kind of apps/websites and more importantly "contests" are you trying to find?

I didn't really use any websites except the boards, but I did use The Knot to see what venues were close to me to determine who I wanted to contact and so forth.

Some friends of mine basically gave me a truck load of magazines an;d coupons and clippings, but they're all from like 4-5 years ago haha. Everyone keeps telling me to enter for David Tutera's contest, or there are drawings for this or that, etc. I just wasn't sure if there was a legitimate site like this one that i also wasn't aware of haha.

I downloaded all the apps that apply to this web site, I'm just so excited!! I can't wait to dive further into this site and get to know all of you wonderfu ladies! <3
  • I would say Groupon and Living Social are pretty good to have while you're planning -- occasionally they'll put out great deals for things like photobooths or beauty treatments. I didn't really pay attention to any of the contests that were advertised ever, so I'm no help there.

I'll second Crash -- the separate email is a must! I still get so much junk mail on my wedding account!

    Congratulations and welcome!

  • Yeah I didn't do a separate email and it was a baaaaad choice. Luckily the day after I got engaged I went ahead and reserved my married name account on g-mail, so I'll be switching over anyways.
Definitely get a Pinterest account if you don't already have one, but don't let it overwhelm you. After I got some ideas I had to stop searching because I kept thinking 'My wedding is NEVER going to be PINTEREST pretty' but then I chilled out a little bit and realized I really didn't care. That site can play mind games!
  • Congrats on your engagement! That newly engaged feeling is amazing, soak it up!

There are tons of options out there (too many, sometimes!), and the best thing I ever did was buy a planning binder from Barnes and Noble so that I could organize everything in one place. It had a budget calculator, sample day-of schedules, and pages to compare vendors based on a variety of categories.
I would say that the sites that I frequented the most were TK, Vistaprint, Etsy, and DFW photog blog sites to get an idea of venues and different points of view/themes. I only went to one Bridal Show, and was totally overwhelmed by it all. I didn't find any of my vendors there, but it helped weed a few out.
  • Once I had my venue picked out, I would type in 'Filter Building Wedding' in google and just scour pictures of other people's weddings so I could get a feel for the lighting and setup.
I also would go to WeddingWire to see what other vendors brides who had gotten married there had used. It's a huge bonus to use a vendor who has used your space before.
  • Welcome and congrats! Honestly, I planned my whole wedding and didn't use anything but TK and this board. Every one of my vendors was a recommendation from this board and they were all fabulous. It's a great community and so helpful. I couldn't have planned my wedding without it. (Of course, that was before Pinterest!) :)
  • Haha, I would have hated Pinterest if I'd had it when I was engaged. Too many ideas!

First of all Congrats and welcome.
I did alot of the same here. I googled my venue which is Swingin D Ranch and searched out pictures of other weddings there for ideas. The beginning research I actually started with Wedding Wire to narrow down my choices and they have alot of revues. I used TK alot and got alot of good information from this board.

  • Welcome! I am about a month and a half until my wedding and I've used only Pinterest and the knot boards. These people are seriously the most helpful especially since they've seen and heard it all.

Here is a link to the one that I purchased--I think there were a few at B&N, but just to give you an idea: CLICKY
  • Congrats!!! This site, magazines, and resourceful friends have been my best bets so far. And Pinterest! And google.... photographer's blogs are good for assessing venues. It's all so fun :)
  • THANK YOU everyone!!! I still am just on cloud 9! I stayed up till about 3am last night on Pinterest haha. Where does the time go? :)
