Pre-Marital Counseling

Hi all im stuck and dont have a ton of time. Our minister requires us to go through pre-marital counseling before he will marry us...he doesnt do it because he isnt a professional and doesnt have a therapist degree....whatever I just need help finding someone. idk if this is wrong of me but Im not looking to spend hundreds of dollars on therapy when it could be spent on something else. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated...p.s. our wedding is this august.

Did he give you any suggestions?

We were married in the Catholic church and were required to meet with our priest several times, take a test to see our differences in personality, etc as well as attend a weekend retreat. There were non Catholic couples on the retreat with us, in fact, a lot of ministers recommend it b/c they really focus on Christian marriage.

I would be happy to give you the website if you think you are interested in doing a weekend retreat.

That sounds great, he did actually give me 1 place they refer people to but she charges $100 per session and she requires we meet with her 3-4 times. I think thats just a little rediculous for an hour...but thats just me. QUESTION though...do you get some sort or certificate when you are finished with the retreat? He asks that we bring something showing we went somewhere....I would love the info...if you like you can email it to me adams.randee@gmail.com thanks

Yes, we got a certificate saying we completed it. We had to show it to our priest in order for him to marry us.

I will be sending you an e-mail shortly...

Its weird to me that he requires you to do counseling but doesnt provide it for you. We are doing pre-maritial counseling with our pastor through our church.
If either of you have insurance you may look into your options with your insurance. I know I have excellent EAP insurance and since the mental health parity act employers give the same amount of mental health coverage as physical coverage.
I would def ask for more references from your pastor or even one of your congregation members may be licensed and can do it for you at a discounted rate.
