June 2012 Weddings

Re: EXPIRED

  • I'm torn as well.  If you saved $50-100, then I would say have 8 to a table.  But since your savings are close to $900, I genuinely don't know.  I would want to save the money, but I also don't want my guests to feel cramped.

I'm wondering if there is a way you and FI could go to the venue and sit in the chairs so you can see how it looks and feels with someone next to you.
  • Stupid Knot won't let me edit.  I meant if you were saving 50-100, I would go 6 to a table, not 8.
  • You could do a mix. I wouldn't want to cram larger people together (like tall, muscular men or overweight people) but if you have small adults and children mixed in it should be ok. Our tables will range from 6-8 people depending how we have them seated b/c of certain groupings that need to stay together.

  • I wouldn't want to be put in an uncomfortable seating situation to save money. It's not just elbow room, but the fact that your guests will be all dressed up. Trying to scoot a chair out from the table in a dress in heels isn't easy, especially if you can't step to the side. I'd also be constantly worried about spilling all over myself. Depending on the guest they may also be uncomfortable sitting that close to someone else. I wouldn't enjoy my meal, being constantly worried about where my elbows were.

A couple of tables with an extra to balance out seating? Sure.
All tables jammed to save money? Not so much.

I agree with this, you obviously need to fit your guests based on their size as well, however, most ppl wont be sitting all night, they will be up and around mingling and dancing so they won't be cramped for a long period of time.
  • I like the idea of mixed tables...some with 6 (larger) and some with 8(smaller) indiviuals. I also like the idea of different centrepieces. I wouldn't want to be crammed, more comfortable
  • Personally, I do not want to hear other people chewing. It grosses me out.
If I had a bigger budget, I'd go big with more tables and alternate centerpieces, JMHO

  • I like the mix idea as well.... at the tables with 8 just make sure they are smaller people or kids. Can you get bigger tables?

  • We're doing a mix of 4 different centerpieces. I love the way a mix of centerpieces looks. It's really nice visually and gives the room more dimension.

We're actually only having 3 of our tall centerpieces. All the other ones are shorter that our guests will be able to see over.
  • How big are these tables? I feel like 6 people is not a lot. Ours easily fit 8.  Have you seen what they look like with 6 versus 8?

Ditto this.  Ours also easily fit 8-10 people with elbow room.
  • I couldn't find how many inches our tables are, and I have no idea what 48" looks like.
  • We're doing a big mix of tables (size wise) and so some tables can fit four people, some 8, some 10. We have a huge variety. We aren't seating people, it's free-seat, so I know families will sit together etc.

I personally would do some 6, some 8, and like PP said put the tables with 8 having kids or something like that. They still need a seat but don't take up the same amount of room as an adult.

Meaghan-our tables are 60in and they sit 8-10. So 48in with 8 adults would be very cramped.

For our 60in tables we did a mix-for the skinny teenagers table-10 people. For my older relatives (including a wheelchair)-8 or 9. I also know my guest list-who would be likely to be miserable/complain about cramping? And we have two different centerpieces, a "cheap one" of just variegated leaves, and a pricy bell jar terrarium.

  • We are doing 60" rounds and I will mix 8 people and 10 people to cut back on the flowers.
That probably means a seating chart, but whatever.

  • Can you compromise and do 7 people per table. It isn't as tight as 8 and would save on the amount of tables you would have to get. You will have people with odd numbers (Like my friend, her husband, and child) Just a thought that may or may not work.
  • Ah ok, ours must be 60" too. I had no idea.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Comfortable or cram? : No the venue only offers the 48" tables. Which I don't mind really. I think we are going to plan for 6 people per table unless it is a table with small children. Then we can add an extra couple. :)

    <div>I think Chels might have meant a mix of centerpieces...maybe I'm wrong?</div><div>
</div><div>I also think it depends on what chairs you have. We're using chivaris and having 10 people at our 60" rounds. I've always been comfortable when attending other weddings with this arrangement, so I think we'll be good.</div>

I found that standard banquet tables are usually 60" rounds which fit 8-10. 48 is a lot smaller and I would opt for mixing if you can.

I would not want to comprimise my guests comfort for budget. Some people are messy eaters, others are left-handed (which poses a problem when seated next to a right-handed person in small quarters).

  • I think mixing is your best bet. I'm doing a mix of different center pieces that are nice and small.

    This is my smallest one

FI is a lefty! This is why I'm seated to his right, our eating hands won't be bumping all evening.
