Music Question

Had our 1st meeting with the priest last night. Everything was going fine up until music for the ceremony came up. I explained that I wanted to use pre-recorded music (string versions of songs) and the priest said that he required live musicians only. 1) I dont have money budgeted for musicians 2) I have my heart set on a certain string piece to walk down the aisle to 3) The only string quartet in my city are already booked for the day of my wedding.

I dont want to have to pay for music that I won't like when I can easily do the music I would love for free! Has anyone else ever heard of the priest demanding live musicians?

Re: Music Question

  • recordings are often not allowed.
i would see if hte organist can play the piece you want.  organist should be only a few hundred dollars.
  • Actually, this is a requirement of the liturgy. Recordings aren't (and shouldn't) be allowed anywhere.

Musicians don't cost much in relation to everything else. I guarantee a dj or band for the reception costs at least 3 times as much.
  • Ditto agape that it is a liturgy requirement.

If I had wanted musicians at my wedding beyond the organist included in our wedding fee, my church only permitted us to hire from their set list of musicians which were very incredibly talented professionals, but way out of our budget.  If you are set on a certain song played in a certain way for your processional, finding live musicians would probably be a worthwhile investment for you.  Since you aren't limited as to whom you hire... you can be selective and probably find a group of musicians in your price range.

Contact local high schools or colleges with orchestras and see if any of their musicians would be willing to play for a more budget-friendly fee.  A lot of high school students in orchestras are very talented and would likely charge a lot less than most since a gig would comparatively be very profitable over their weekend job at a movie theater!  Better yet, if you have any friends that play violin, viola or cello... ask them if they'd be willing to play at your wedding.

This is actually not a bad route, but you still have to treat it like a business transaction (a friend of mine hired an acquaintance of one of our friends who is a music grad student, and it was terrible).  I worked with the orchestra conductor at my school when H and I were thinking of having a quartet, and he was able to recommend a group (of adults) that was very reasonable.  I actually had a group of students who were in a string quartet, and would have loved it for them to play at my wedding, but we ended up going without.

FWIW, my heart was always set on string quartet as well, but I fell in love with the fanfare that having just an organ can give you.  Good luck!

  • I know the hourly rates of some sort-of-pros on gigmasters are less than my parish's organist is paid per Mass. (sort-of-pros = obviously, these are people with day jobs, but they play music for payment regularly). gigmasters is basically a website collecting advertisements from sort-of-music-pros, as far as I can tell. My fiance is in charge of music. I've just looked over his shoulder (politely, of course).
  • I would try to contact the local Catholic high school.  The students would already be familiar with the mass parts and could help keep costs low.
  • I went to the local Catholic highschool and neither of the 2 schools have a strings section.

I was just curious as I have been to a total of 6 Catholic weddings and none of them had live musicians. 2 had no extra musicians and the others all had instrumental music on their ipods/mp3 player and had it hooked into the church's sound system.

I understand the point of the music is to act as a prayer and encourage the congregation to pray collectively, but I have a spiritual attachment of sorts to the song I want and it gives me goosebumps to listen to it.

The fee for the musician is outrageous and while yes I am having a dj, they are only 50 dollars more than the musicians fee but I have them for 8 hours, not one.
