My hairstylist quit.

This is a bit of a vent, sorry.  I got an email this morning from the stylist that I had hired for myself and my three bridesmaids.  She booked a job as the wigmaster on a traveling off broadway production and will have to cancel with me.  She's returning the deposit I made of course, but I frankly am a bit pissed off.  I want my $80 back from the hair trial.  I would never have had that trial in the first place if she wasn't going to be available for my wedding date!

It would be gauche to ask for a refund on the trial wouldn't it?

I'm so annoyed, now I have less than four months to book someone new!

Oh wow, that does suck bad. I'd be annoyed about paying for the trial too. Im not sure about asking for the money back for it, but I'd be so pissed. I think she should've offered to give it back.

  • Sorry that happened! She is breaking a contract - it doesnt matter she got a better offer.  She should pay you back whetever you spent on her - it is her responsability to put you back where you started before doing business with her.  Technically, she is also supposed to pay the difference b/w what she was charging and the replacement you find (as long as they are in the same level in the field).  So yep - I would write her a stern letter and say I expect my 80 bucks back.

  • Just an update:  everything (so far!) seems to have worked out ok.  There was a clause in the contract that allowed her to bow out if she returned the deposit.  When reading the contract I just assumed that meant more acts of God than a better offer.  I do understand from her point of view that three months pay takes precedence over a wedding, but it was an upsetting situation obviously.

Jen (my *former* stylist) put me in touch with a friend of hers, Amanda, as a possible replacement.  When Amanda emailed me her prices, it was more than double what Jen had charged!  I explained the situation and my budget, and Amanda was able to accommodate me within my budget as a favor to Jen.  Amanda and Jen also offered to do a free trial with me, so that Jen could show Amanda how she had done my hair before and I could see Amanda's work.

I think that, all considered, Jen did an admirable job of providing as good of a substitute as was possible.  Would I have preferred less stress and just have one trial and Jen do my hair as planned? Sure.  Am I comfortable with the current arrangement? Yes.  Provided this new trial goes well.

I think the fact that both of us were polite (although I did express my frustration and distress at the situation) and reasonable made this much less stressful than it could have been.

That's great news! I'd be satisfied with that outcome as well! I'm glad she didn't just drop you and left you hanging to find someone else. I hope it works out!

I'm so glad that worked out for you!  Sorry you had the initial stress though :(
  • Kudos to you for keeping calm. Wedding stress can make us act much crazier than we normally would, so it's good to hear that you kept it together. It'll all work out.
