Anyone not totally in love with FI's last name?

This has been kind of an issue for me since I met FI and knew we'd be married someday.  I actually love my current name, which is actually my married name from my first marriage, not my maiden name (which I also liked).  I do not like FI's last name.  I know it's silly because it's just a last name, but his last name is White.  I know none of you have met me, but most people will say I'm the palest person they've ever met and when I tell people that my last name is going to be White it usually comes with a snicker and a "No, seriously?  You're kidding, right?".  Yes, I'm white and I'm becoming a White.  Back off!  :P

BUT, I want to have FI's last name so I'll deal with it!  He says he's fine with me keeping my current name just because my business and my passport and everything else is tied to that name and it'll be pretty expensive to change everything ($500+ from what I understand).  LOVE HIM!  But, I want to have the same last names as my husband and kids.

Am I alone here?  Do you love or hate your FI's last name / your future name if you're taking it.

I believe in a lot of things. I believe in fresh tennis balls, the healing power of bunnies, and that the novels of Susan Sontag are something I'll never read. In fact, I don't even know who Susan Sontag is. What is she... like... a painter? I believe in Crystal Lite because I believe in ME. I believe in the movies of Val Kilmer, though these days it ain't so easy. I believe in Darren Sproles, the word "dabble", the first season of "Silk Stockings", and big, warm, moist, gooey chocolate chip cookies that melt in your mouth and all over your face.

Re: Anyone not totally in love with FI's last name?

  • I love my FI's last name.  It's Sotora (Sa-Tora)  It's way better than my current last name.  I always think of Maggie Sottero the designer when I hear it though.  It's not a name I have ever heard of before.

Oooh I like yours!  I think the "normalcy" of White also bugs me.  I want something cool like yours!  My maiden name is a motorcycle company and my married name is very Irish which really fit my pale red-headed self (even though I'm only a little Irish, really).  I loved both of them.

  • The only thing I hate about my FI's last name is that it's 12 characers long, while my current last name is 5!! Yes 2.5x the current length... Oh and I think his first name goes SO well with it and mine won't flow as nicely.. Ohh well! :)

  • I like FI's last name just fine, but I am really sad about losing my last name. I think it is mostly because I know a lot of the history about my last name and don't know much about his. I am changing my last name because we both feel it is important to have the same last name. He has emotional ties to his last name and I woulnd't ask him to give that up.

I used to be excited about getting a new last name because mine was unique enough that I had to spell it out for people ALL THE TIME! So yeah I was looking forward to not being weird. Well FI name is pretty common...Morris. So that is way more boring than my current last name and for some reason you still have to spell it for everyone because they can't understand the sounds. Like one time on a take out order the person had put it under Lauren. really? oh well.

Plus it is super tricky to write in cursive!! Its so loopy.
  • My FI's last name is Anderson....I will now have the most common name in America :) I will still love it though!

  • I thought I was the only person who felt this way. My last name is pretty common, and his is just boring. Lol I'm not psyched but I got over it. I am marrying him, after all. :)
  • I don't really care about changing my last name... His name and mine are only 3 letters different, so while it will be a change, it's not a huge thing for me.

<div>OK, I would LOVE to have the last name Morris.  I would tell people what it is by saying "Morris, like Zach" and see how many people actually get the reference.  Sadly, I have a feeling that anyone under the age of 20 wouldn't get it.  So sad!</div>

  • I ALWAYS have to spell my maiden name, usually twice so I'm excited to take his name which is a lot more simple. It's not super common, though, so I like that it's still a bit unique. The only thing that I don't like is that it's a little longer the length. Right now, my first and last name usually fit in the space allotted on forms with no space to spare. Now I'm adding an additional 3 letters! Not sure how I will fill out paperwork. Lol

  • My last name is so long and hard to say. Every time I meet someone and I say my last name they make me repeat it and try to say it. Everyone has such a hard time with my last name.. Its diff not a common last name.  I love my last name its just so different. I always said when I got married I would marry someone with an easy last name and its coming true. I am kinda sad about giving up my last name.   Now my name is going to be matchy matchy... My last name is going to be Carr.. Way easier than my real last name. lol

  • I don't mind FI's last name.  It's Digeon (pronounced Dijon - like the mustard).  So basically I'll become Mrs. Mustard.  Of course it's totally fitting since he's French.

  • I am loving that I am taking his last name. My last name is 10 letters long so I will  not miss having to write that all the time. His last name is Berkey, I am sure i will have to spell it a lot for people but thats ok too.

  • I like FI's last night, and I will be taking it.  I will always have to spell it for people though... It is Tisdell and people always spell it Tisdale (he even gets stuff from the VA spelled like that - really VA?).  My former last night from a previous marriage was way more annoying -Willman - people would see the Will and assume Williams. Even at my college graduation where you right down your full name and phonetic spelling if needed - guess who was annouced as a Williams - this girl.  I was like really all the hard ass names you are pronouncing correctly and you mess up Willman!
  • I'm not excited to change my name to my FI's. His is really long and hard to pronounce I'm always going to have to spell it for people. My name is simple and very common. I'm probably going to keep my last name for work so I don't have to spell it out for everybody.

If it was 1990 that would be the coolest last name to have or Knight.  I so wanted to Marry Jordan Knight back then.  Ohhh what about Slater though, I liked AC better than Zack! lol....now I'm showing my true age lol
  • My last name is the 7th most common in the US - Miller. I'm happy to get ride of it. FI's is a couple letters longer, and I will probably have to spell it occasionally (there are a couple alternate spellings), but I can deal with it. What I'm having trouble with is learning my new signature. It starts with an L and that just doesn't really flow with the way I currently sign my name!!

    Still here and still fabulous!

  • I hate my last name, and I like JP's so much better. Therefore, I cannot wait to take his name. Mine is Cloyd (totally random, I know) and people always pronounce it Cloud. Apparently some people skipped the 1st grade and don't know the difference between the ou and oy sounds. JP's is definitely more common and so much easier to pronounce.

  • I really LOVE my last name...it's Lawrence and I have loved being an "LL". Plus I am a teacher and I have always thought Ms. Lawrence sounded so good. Well my FI's name is Mosely and I am definitely taking it (I want the same name as him and my kids) but very reluctantly! First, he is almost the only Mosely in the world that doesn't spell it Mosley and people are always misspelling it for him. And I don't like the way Mrs. Mosely sounds....I guess it just reminds me of his grandmother lol

One good thing about being a teacher is that I will get used to my new name really fast! Nothing like hearing it 5,000 times a day to get you acclimated!

  • I actually LOVE Fi last name (Reed) however do dont think it flows with my first name, Brandy. I will be honored to take his last name will just take some getting used to. Current last name is Besido, and has become a nickname, but is from a previous marriage so its def gotta go! I will love becoming a Reed so maybe I can just change my first name !! lol
  • I am keeping my last name (Le Blanc) and just stick his lastname (plag) to it. I never had the idea to take his name, it was even the planning that he would take my last name. So think our solution is just fine for us :)
