Real or fake?

I was wondering if I should go with real flowers hire a florist, which for what my fiancee wants might be expensive, or real touch flowers which means having to do it myself?

I'm not getting married til at least 2014, I'm just not sure what to do and would LOVE some opinions please.

Re: Real or fake?

  • A lot of times using the really nice silk flowers tend to cost just as much if not more then using real flowers.

You have plenty of time to decide what you want and to price out a few different florists in your area.

    What does your FI want?

  • He wants roses and calla lilies and other type of flower that I can't remember right now lol. Plus I'm confused as to what I should use for my bridesmaids' flowers, since I want an allwhite bouquet, and my colors are purple, teal/turquoise, and blue. It's a peacock theme.
  • This is purely a judgment call, and you're going to get opinions both ways.  But here's what I think:  don't have fake stuff at your wedding.  Don't wear fake hair.  Don't have fake flowers.  Drink the good booze, not the cheap stuff.  Wear silk, not polyester.  And not all of this is necessarily more expensive - real can also be affordable, you just have to be choosy.  You'll feel like a million bucks!
  • I prefer real flowers to fake flowers also.

The cost of real flowers varies by season and by location.  The best way to judge the cost is to get quotes from professional florists for the flowers that you want and the time of year that you want.

Fake flowers look fake in real life and in pictures 20 years later.   There are "good" fakes but they still look fake.  "Good" fake flowers are almost as pricey as real flowers.

There are very few flowers that are blue, teal and turquoise.  Hydrangeas, larkspur, one type of orchid and a type of thistle are available in light blue  The orchids and thistles are beautiful but pricey.  Eucalyptus is teal but has an aroma that some find overpowering.  Dyed flowers are available but are a risk because sometimes the dye will come off the flowers.

Consult with professionals in your area and good luck.
  • Roses are fairly inexpensive at any time of year. Most florists and online floral websites (Costco, Sam's Club, Fiftyflowers.com) get them from US or South American suppliers. Calla lillies can be more expensive than roses, but the total cost is going to depend on how many of each you want. We got a 20 piece white rose wedding package from Costco for $399.........it was lovely. You can get the rest of your colors into the dresses and decor and go with all one color.

A single calla lilly carried by a bridesmaid can be elegant. However, they don't come in the colors you mentioned.

Post on your local board to get recommendations of best prices and quality for your area.

I also prefer real flowers, but this is always a personal choice on the Knot boards. The more real the silk flowers look, the more expensive they are.

To give your fiance an idea, take him to Michael's or Joann's and look at the silk flowers. Even with a 50% off coupon, it's not inexpensive to do bouquets and floral arrangements.

    Good luck.
  • I'm planning to do a bit of both, simply because my mom won't wear a corsage made with a real flower (she has a HUGE insect phobia and isn't at all thrilled that we're having an outdoor wedding). So for her, I'll be making a silk corsage. My flowers will be real, because I can't imagine anything but.

PPs are right, the good silk flowers are expensive and real flowers don't come in the colours that you've picked. You may have to do some compromising, but you've still got time.

Do some research, visit craft stores and florists, and maybe watch some YouTube videos to see if making bouquets is something that you want to tackle yourself.

I am doing fakes just for the bridal party bouquets and bouts. I bought all my floral supplies from Michaels using 50, 40 percent off coupons and 25 percent off eniter purchase sale and didnt spend 100 on all the stuff I bought. Im doing the peacock theme so I used teal colored gerber daisies and purple hydreangeas and 3 feathers. So maybe you can use something like that. Only real flowers ill be using is my bouquet and FI bout. For my centerpieces ill be using just the feathers. If you have some question of how im incorporating the colors and feathers you can pm me !

  • I am incredibly allergic to flowers, so we are going with fake.  I bought all my flowers at HobbyLobby when stems are 50% off and I only spent $60, and you honest to goodness can't tell that they are fake.

  • I used real touch flowers for my wedding, they weren't cheap but they were beautiful. I don't think anyone could tell they were fake.
  • I used www.silkflowersbyjean.com they use a lot of real touch flowers. Also check out Silk flowers by jean Facebook page for lots of samples.

I am thinking about having my wedding bouquet using dupioni silk flowers. I don’t want a bouquet that looks like I bought it in the dollars store. i want a bouquet that looks like is a piece of art. I want to have different textures, silks, crystals, pears...just a Stunning Bouquet

I prefer silk flower to real flowers, because they tend to be an extra worry before, during and after the wedding. they need water, leak and only can be beautiful for a couple of days. With silk flowers I can keep them for life!!!

Here are some bouquets that I absolute love!!!!
