Groom/Men's attire

So I am seriously clueless on where to start looking for the guys' attire. I kind of want them to wear something somewhat casual. I like the look of a black pinstriped shirt with a black jacket and black slacks or maybe even black jeans, top button unbuttoned, no tie. The problem is I don't know if I can rent something like this for the guys, or where the cheapest place would be for them to buy what they need. I don't want it to cost them more than renting a tux would.

My fiance never wears formal clothes and doesn't own anything except for one sport coat (that doesn't even fit him), so he doesn't know anything either. Has anyone else went more casual for their grooms attire, and how did you go about getting it?

Re: Groom/Men's attire

  • jc pennys, sears, department stores are your freind, they often have sales on slacks and dress shirts that can be very cheap

  • I would start with your FI talking to each groomsman individually and asking what they can afford to spend on an outfit. That way, you will know what budget you're working with (you need to stay under the lowest budget ... or be prepared to pitch in some cash to help out, if the budgets are too low for what you want them to wear).

I would also ask each groomsman what he already owns that he could wear ... a suit, sports jacket or blazer, dress shirt, khakis, black slacks, black jeans, etc. That way, if there's a common element amongst them, you could build their outfit off that (so that there's less they need to rent/buy).

Then your FI can go to a formalwear shop and ask a clerk for help - he can describe the overall formality level of your wedding, what he wants to spend, what he likes, and then they should be able to help him out. A clerk at a decent department store, or a personal shopper (if your store offers this for free), should be able to help as well.

Did you buy your own gown yet? Don't forget that your gown will set the formality level, so it wouldn't really be appropriate if you are in a big ballgown and your FI is not wearing a jacket or tie.

  • Well, here's my dress:

I found a picture of this look (black jeans, a black pinstripe dress shirt, and a black sport jacket), and I kinda liked it (minus the brown belt and the fact that the jacket is corduroy):

Will it go? Or is my dress too formal-looking?

Our colors are black, red, and ivory. So they will have some kind of red flower boutonniere.

ahh! I never thought figuring out the guys' attire would be so complicated! lol.

Thanks for all the ideas so far though, I will definitely use them!

  • i dont think your guys need to necessarily wear white shirts.  i think the red rose is better than a red tie.  red ties speaks: Senior Prom

try Express Men.  the guy you have in that pic looks very young/modern.  Express has sales and coupons ALL THE TIME.

    GL!
  • I would be sure to look into renting before you buy a suit. A nice suit even at Penny's is going to run them each at least $150 and then they will need the shirt, the tie and shoes. Unless you can get a package deal that some stores do offer. Jose A Banks offers sales sometimes where if you buy the suit you get a free shirt or two or a free pair of additional matching pants. Their suits are very nice. FI has to wear a suit to work everyday and has purchased several from them.
