Too Early to Start Looking for Wedding Dress?

So I'm not getting married until Oct 8, 2011 and I told myself that I wouldn't start looking at dresses until this fall, but...I got an e-mail about a David Tutera trunk show (w/ 10% off) at I Do! I Do! in Morristown this Saturday and I made an appointment. My sister (also my MOH) will be home for Mother's Day weekend, and I thought it might be fun to go with her and my mom. Is this a bad idea? Part of me feels like it's too soon (and, for whatever reason, I'm really nervous about trying on gowns!).

When did everyone start looking for a dress? Also, anyone heard of this salon?

I'm getting married October 2010 and started trying on gowns in September 2009. It totally depends on the person. If you want to go- then go! Even if you just go to get an idea of what you like and then take a couple months off from shopping and go again. That way you don't have to wait but you aren't rushing into anything either.

Maybe too early to do hardcore looking, but you can definitely browse and start getting an idea of what you like.  I would just make sure you don't buy a dress at this point unless you feel along the lines of I LOVE LOVE IT OMG I WOULD DIE WITHOUT IT about it, because a lot of girls have second thoughts and you don't want to settle on something early just to realize later that you were caught up in the moment.

I got my dress last July/August. Now, to be fair, I've been engaged since January of 2008, but we didn't have a wedding date until just a month or so ago.

Basically, I saw the dress of my dreams online, begged my mother and FMIL to come with me to try it on... Mom cried... dress was on sale... I tried on others to make a go of "looking"... tried on The Dress again... Mom cried... again... we bought it.

    In other words: GO!

I started looking at 1 year out. I agree its slightly early for you to be looking seriously. Nothing wrong with taking a look and trying thigns on. DO NOT let the sales lady push you into buying something though. Trunk Shows contrairy to what the sales lady might tell you do happen seasonally so you can wait until the fall trunk shows to order your dress. Unless its a really old style it will still be there.

I think it's probably a bit early for buying but not for looking. Just remember styles and your personal tastes could and probably will change between now and when you prepare to actually purchase the dress. You don't want to have second thoughts!

I got engaged in July of last year. I didn't start to look for wedding gowns until the beginning of this year. I just looked through magazines prior to that to get an idea of what I liked. Just like pp stated I didn't want to feel like I needed to get something and then be confused about it later on. I say go and look but give it sometime styles are always changing and new gowns come out.

I really held off on buying my dress b/c I knew that I would change my mind if I bought it too soon. I was also trying to lose some more weight. I started looking in July, and bought in August for my May wedding- so 9 months out. It's just what worked for me. I was also nervous about trying on dresses, and ended up trying on well over 100 before all was said and done.

I got engaged in November 2009, and our wedding is May 2011.  In January my mom and I decided to start looking for fun.  I went a few more times in February and still hadn't had the intention to buy until I found my dress and they offered me 30% off the sample.  I definitely think you can start looking around now, but it may be hard if you find something you love that you aren't prepared to buy right then!

I got engaged October of 2008, picked out my dress May 2009 and getting married August 2010....I'm happy with my choice, I love my dress.

I have to add that I am one of those lucky girls that had the OMG This is THE ONE, when I tried my dress on, not everyone has this feeling. So do not settle if you're not 100% sure at this point, there is plenty of time. The only bad thing about picking my dress so far out, is that I saw a picture of a friend that got married recently and she wore my dress (but they're not close  to us so are not invited) but still I was like OH NOs she has MY dress...LOL

I started looking in March 08, but just looked in August of 08 I knew the two I was in between, ordered in September of 08, was married in November of 09.  I liked looking, but in the end, I went to a store I wasn't planning on buying from just to try on a bunch of "different" dresses and fell in love with one.

Thanks girls! Hopefully I can just try on a bunch of styles to get an idea of what I like--don't think I will buy anything this early unless I absolutely fall in love with a dress, but you never know!

I am getting married in July 2011. I had no intention of getting a dress until at least a year out or less. My mother was hounding me about looking for dresses and we went in March. I fell in love with a dress and ended up getting it. I was a little nervous that my style would change or that I would hate it in a year, but I think everyone goes through that!

I say go looking and if it happens, it happens!

UPDATE: I went dress shopping today and found 2 gowns that I loved--no purchases yet, though. I also have to highly recommend I Do...I Do... in Morristown. It was such a cute shop and the ladies there were so incredibly nice and helpful...not pushy at all. I hope I end up buying my dress there!
