What do I actually need to wear under my dress?

I know I'm supposed to bring whatever I plan to wear under my dress to my fittings, but what do I actually need and why? I know a lot of people wear slips and boustiers, but are they actually needed or is that just if your dress doesn't fit well?

Re: What do I actually need to wear under my dress?

  • im wearing just a bra and undies but the shapewear ones :)
  • I think it really depends on you and the dress. I'm planning on just a bra and undies for now. The ladies at DB were trying to talk me into a bustier and slip deal, but I was not convinced, especially for the prices they wanted to charge me.

  • It's whatever you're most comfortable with and what makes you and your dress look best. Some dresses require more "substantial" undergarments to stay up properly or to look as smooth as they should.

I'm wearing a crinoline underneath my dress becuase I liked how much poofier it looked with it and I'm wearing a long-line bra because I have a very large chest and a strapless dress so I need as much support for my chest as I can get.

  • Thanks! All I wore when I was trying them on was my typical undergarments and it seemed fine.
  • Whatever any of you girls do, don't wear a boned corset! As the maid of honor at my sister's wedding, I spent the day trying to help her not pass out and trying to make her less uncomfortable. Eventually, while at the photographer's studio, I helped her take off the stupid corset and we threw it in the garbage. Her dress ended up having a bit of a caved in look and she didn't have the chest support she needed but she was finally comfortable and could enjoy herself. I wish we had known about Spanx (this was almost 10 years ago and I don't think they were popular yet.)

Right after I got engaged, I volunteered to work a bridal showcase at a store opening. It was 8 hours long with one dress change every hour. We had to walk around the store greeting customers to show off the dresses. While it was super fun, I couldn't believe how HEAVY the dresses started to feel. By the 8th hour I limped out of the store and vowed to find the lightest dress I could find. When I found my dress, I knew it was heavier than I wanted but because it has an empire waist I can skip Spanx or slips. I am just bringing my regular Victoria's Secret strapless bra to the fitting to see if I could/should wear that under the dress and it it could be sewn in so I don't have to worry about it showing all day or having to constantly tug it up.
I am also going to COAT myself in baby powder before the dress goes on. I've also seen brides reccomend anti-chafing products.

  • My dress has a corset, so it's pretty structured as is. So, no bra for me and I'll probably wear some comfy undies and call it a day.

  • Just planning to get some cute bridal undies from VS. No bra needed since my dress is very structured.
