Cake tasting question

Hello!

Just wondered if any of you had to pay for your cake tasting. We went to one baker and didn't. We were thinking of going to another baker just for comparison, and this one is charging. We somewhat don't mind the money, it's more or less the idea of it. I'm just wondering what is normal around here. What has been your experience with this?

Re: Cake tasting question

  • The only bakery that I have been to that was going to charge me was Pennsylvania Bakery.  The others did not and since I've had several cakes of PA Bakery, we decided not to taste there.
  • Hmm. . . that's exactly the place I'm referring to. We have an appointment there this Saturday, but we may cancel. Can I ask why you didn't taste there? Was it the money or something else?

I contacted one bakery that charged $25 for the tasting. I decided to cancel my appointment there and just did tastings at two other places. The place that charged was the one I was the least interested in, so I figured why bother.

  • Just my own two cents but if you're going to purchase say a $500 cake.. why not give $10 dollars (if that!) worth of cake away free to your potentials!  I'd say no go and don't pay for a cake test.  Just makes the bakery sound even more after just your money and not your actual business.
  • My best friend used to work at the PA Bakery in Camp Hill.  She has told me horror stories about how they freeze the wedding cakes and then they dry out....and you don't get your money back!  We are using SweeTreats in Mechanicsburg.

I didn't taste there because my family has gotten birthday cakes from there and I just didn't feel it was necessary to have to pay for a tasting.  I decided I would go first to the bakeries that didn't charge and if we didn't like them, then go to the PA Bakery.  We ended up going to Schenk's and LOVING them so that made it easy!
  • Thanks all for your input!

We did cancel our appointment. The $20 fee wasn't sitting well with FI. Onto the next!
  • We decided not to taste there, either!! We ended up with getting cupcakes for our upcoming wedding. Just Cupcakes in York! THEY ARE AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so happy with our decision!!!!! My mouth waters just thinking about their cupcakes!

NO NO.. don't pay for a tasting! They should want to give your a piece of their cake for free to get your business. I have been to different wedding shows and all of the cake booths had free cake.
I am using the House of Claredon in downtown Lancaster..and they did not charge me.

Try some where else, there are plenty of people that will give you a tasting for free because they need your business. Plus $20 for what..5 little sampling pieces of cake? Seriously?!

  • I agree with pp...more than enough good bakeries around that don't charge; and it just doesn't make any sense not to give potential customers a sampling.

We went to one bakery that offered a free 6" cake with two flavors, fillings, and icings for tasting.  The cake smelled funky (like anise) when we opened the box, and the vanilla buttercream had a weird aftertaste.  I figured maybe she hit the anise extract instead of the vanilla, so we did pay $10 to get a second sample from her -- and my FMIL did not like it at all (although the anise smell/taste was gone); so we looked elsewhere.

I'm okay with paying for an "extra" tasting...but not the initial.
