Alternatives to glass tinking

Okay girls... Are you going to do the traditional kiss when glasses are being "tinked" by your guests? I really hate this tradition, and FI says we should just ignore it and they'll stop. However, I think it would be better to come up with an alternative, because I'm still going to want to kiss him like crazy! :)

We went to a wedding last year where the newlyweds pulled a name of a couple that was there as guests and they had to kiss first before the bride and groom would. Or I've been talking to people and heard that there are poems or other things that need to be done first.

So what are your thoughts?

Re: Alternatives to glass tinking

  • I really don't like the glass clinking thing....I'm hoping to ignore it and have it go away.

I'm not too concerned about it.  If it happens, we'll kiss.  If not, we won't.  If it continues to happen over and over again, we'll probably just ignore it.

My parents were at a wedding earlier this year where the bride and groom had bells attached to the place cards and there was a little saying that said something about ringing it for the bride and groom to kiss. My parents said the bells were small though and hardly made noise, so something to consider if you wanted to do this.

  • I've been to a wedding where you had to sing a song or part of a song that has the word love in it. Honestly I think the ignore it theory doesn't work. Any wedding I've been to the crowd just gets louder and more annoying. FI and I aren't big PDA people but I figure its not the worst thing in the world to take 5 seconds to kiss for the enjoyment of our guests instead of annoying everyone more by waiting 30 seconds for people to get bored and stop tinking their glasses.
  • There won't be any glass clinking at my wedding unless they're going to clink plastic punch cups. We do have some bells that I haven't decided if I will use or not.

  • Our venue doesn't allow glass clinking since some people can get a little over zealous when they've had a drink or two and glasses can get broken. We're debating between these two:

    1) Guests have to give a piece of marriage advice
    2) Guests pull a chocolate kiss out of a bowl. If it's a certain colour we kiss, if it's a different colour they have to kiss someone.

  • We're not too worried about it either - if it happens, we kiss, if not, no biggie.  I've seen couples do the bells at the chair before in lieu of glass clinking and it was cute (except when the kids got a bit overzealous playing with the bells).
  • That isn't something that's common in my area. I've never been to a wedding where guests did something to make the couple kiss. I'd never heard of it until I joined TK!

  • I've seen the song thing like PP said. I went to a winter wedding where they had jingle bells.

I thought about doing mini maracas since I'm a Spanish teacher I thought it'd be fun. But at the end of the day, it's unnecessary use of money. So we're just going to see what happens. If people clink we kiss. If not, too bad.

  • I have never been to a wedding where anything other than clinking glasses was done and even though only a few times.    It people clink glasses we will kiss but I hope they don't get carried away as the night goes on.

  • Gah, I didn't even think about this.  Hope it doesn't happen.

  • We have no plans to kiss to clinking glasses, both FI and my sister got married a few summers ago and I don't remember any clinking at their weddings so I don't think it will be a problem at ours.
It doesn't have to be perfect to be everything I want!

  • I'm all about the glass tinking!!  It's a cute tradition!  I'm sure I'll have a few drinks in by then and the kisses will be more than the "tinkers" bargained for!

  • If you ignore it people will get the idea and stop. If you just want an alternate you can have them sing to make you kiss. I saw one (and this is the only one I would do if anything) the B&G were Gamers (Dungeons and Dragons type gamers) and they had a huge inflatable 20 sided die. If you wanted them you kiss you had to roll the die. If it landed on a number between 11-20 they would kiss but if it was a 1-10 you had to find someone to kiss.  FI and I are gamers so that really appealed, but alas I can't find the big 20 sided inflatable die and it isn't as fun with the little regular versions where no one else can see what the number is.
