Wedding Invitations & Paper

on the edge of $.044 and $0.61 stamps for invitations, HELP

I went to the post office to get one invitation weighed, for the second time to double check on the postage cost.  The first time, it was going to cost $0.44 per invitation to mail, as long as I added nothing.  Well, nothing was added and this time, it's 1.10 ounces, but he weighed it again and it was 1 ounce.  I don't know what was going on with the scale.  Because of the first weigh-in weeks ago, I already purchased a lot of stamps.  Now I am worried that I brought the wrong ones, or did I buy the right ones?  I have already spent a lot of money on postage and worried of buying so much more money worth if it turns out I didn't have to.  With the response card, there is a flap on the card that is in the envelope (I imagine to keep response card in place), I hope you know what I mean by that.  Do you think I should get rid of flap all together or half of it and just place card under the envelope flap?  What suggestions do you have to keep the invitation at a $0.44 cost instead of a $0.61 cost?.  I have NO other inserts besides the RSVP card.

I can really use anyone's help!!
Thanks Christina

  • the latest time you weighed it, was that at home or the post office?

make sure you go to an actual post office with an actual postmaster. annexes or a post office express can vary in price and their scales may not be calibrated properly. (we ship things all the time with the buisness and it does make a difference which office you go to)

if the flap seems pointless and you can do without it, (and if its easliy removable) remove it just to be sure. if you have a paper cutter, can you trim edges off of the rsvp card?

you can skip the RSVP card for your WP and Parents, (or hand deliver those since youre bound to see them soon)

i would take the ready-to-go invites unstamped to the PO and have them weigh them for you again. if you must upgrade your stamp, they will buy back the wrong ones and sell you the bigger ones so you only have 1 on the envelope. if they say the 1 .44 stamp is fine, your good to go.

  • Thanks! That was very helpful.  I actually went to the main post office here both times.  I didn't know that unused sheets of stamps can potentially be brought back, great to know!
  • i would always pay the little bit extra and be on the safe side.  think of all the ruined outer envelopes if they all get sent back.  i've heard you can possibly like swamp stamps for the higher ones and just pay the uptick - obviously double check that one
  • Pay the extra.  If they're off slightly then they could be weighed at another post office and returned to your for insufficient postage.  And that's one plug ugly stamp that goes on your beautiful invitation envelope.
  • I think it's better to pay the extra.  Just call it insurance against having to do the envelopes again if they get rejected.

Yep. Different post offices means different scales, and what may fly at your hometown post office, may not fly at another one if they envelope ends up getting weighed again (which is possible). Just pay the extra. And you can take 0.44 cents back, but what's wrong with having stamps on hand? You'll need them to mail out thank you's. :)

  • Whit is a very wise newlywed.
  • I concur - pay the extra.  Plus, the wedding cake stamps are cute.  :D
