  Choose the ones you really want by your side.  There's no need to tell people that they didn't make the cut.  I think that would just make things more awkward having to explain why.  If you want to include everyone then why not ask them all to get ready with you.  It's not a requirement but it would be nice to see them before you walk down the aisle and have some fun getting ready photos with them.

  Just ask the people you are close to. No one should be asking you if they are in the WP or not; that's just rude.You don't owe anyone explanations as to why you didn't ask them. If they are rude enough to ask you if they are included, you have to honest and not lead them on. Just say, "I have already asked my WP but I would be honored if you would attend as a guest." Many people don't think that being a guest is an honor too, but it is. Out of everyone you could invite, you are choosing to invite them.

  Don't pick your wedding party until 6 -9 months before your wedding. So much can happen between now and Dec 2012. If anyone asks, tell them that you haven't decided yet.
  
  In the meantime, check out the 'wedding party' board, as well as this one. You will see many posts from brides who asked too early  and now want to make changes in their wedding parties.

  Ditto this! If your wedding isn't till Dec of next year, I would give it some time before you pick. Buying yourself a little time does nothing but good, trust me. Maybe in a few months it will become abundantly clear which girls you want to ask.

  definitely wait it out until closer...i am sorry you have to go through that because no one should ask you to be a BM or assume.

  
  

   I see A LOT of posts complaining about awful BMs and maid of honors so really make sure you ask people you know will be by your side no matter what. Dont get pressured or let anyone make you choose.

  
  

  This is one thing you, without a shadow of a doubt, have 100% control over...no one else should have input because you know your relationships with people better than anyone else.
