Catholic Brides - Pre-marriage preparation costs?

Hi Ladies,

My fiance & I are currently living in Chicago, but have decided to get married at my Church back home in Houston, TX. We need to complete our pre martial preparation through a church up here. I have contacted some churches near where we live in the city and I am completely floored by the amount of money they are asking for! Just to do Prep only through their church they are asking $300+. At home the prep involves a 2 day retreat that costs about $60.

Is this normal, are we just going to have to pay that much? We would be willing to drive out to nearby suburbs, if anyone knows of a church they think might be willing to work with us.

Thanks for any advice you can give!

  • Check out this website: http://www.familyministries.org/resources/index.asp?c_id=16&t_id=2

It's the Chicago Archdiocese Family Ministries.  They have day-long pre-cana on Saturdays and it's $190. I would check w/the priest/diocese where you are getting married to see if that is sufficient; that is the most important thing.

Unfortunately it seems like every diocese and even every priest/church is different. For example, at the church we got married at in the suburbs we had our choice of which pre-cana session we wanted to do through the diocese and then just had to meet w/our priest three times (mainly to discuss the ceremony).  I know other couples who got married in the Chicago Archdiocese that had to do more sessions, had to complete the FOCCUS test, etc.
  • We are doing our precana at a church in Logan Square.  The fee we are paying is $100.  Classes are starting next month meeting every Tuesday for five weeks I think.

  • Would you mind sharing the name of the church? You can private message me. Thanks!
  • I would love to know that church as well.  We are also getting married out of state but are working with a priest here.  We were planning to pay the $190 for pre-cana, but would love to save costs!
    Thanks!
  • I will pay $400.00 for the church and I already paid $190.00 for the pre-cana session.
  • We paided $400 for the church. Currently completing my confirmation sacrament. I am nervous about what other hoops I have to jump through.

By the way, are there any grooms on here or only brides?  I love coming on here to read up on topics and discuss with my fiance.  She is busy with work. I have a more laid back work schedule. I been doing most of the legwork and presenting our options.  We decide together.

  • Hi!  The church name is St. John Berchman.  We are actually getting married at a church in the suburbs but the coordinator said she would be able to write us a letter so we can give to the church we will be married at.  http://www.stjohnberchmans.org/info.asp?content=PA-Parish%20Welcome

Hope to see some of you in class next month!
