Help with flowers!!

We are paying for our wedding ourselves, so we have tried to keep costs down as much as possible in order to afford everything. I've pretty much gotten all of the main things taken care of except for the flowers. I wanted fresh flowers to begin with, thinking I might be able to splurge on at least the flowers, but the vendor told me it was going to cost way more than what I was looking to pay for fresh flowers.

I've been looking online at silk flowers and they are about the same, if not more! I'm not even looking for expensive flowers and not having much luck. I live in west Texas and all the floral places around here want to charge as much as bigger cities and I'm getting frustrated. Any suggestions on where I should try? I'm looking to only spend a few hundred and the only flowers I'm needing are for the bouquets and bouts. TIA!

Re: Help with flowers!!

  • It sounds like your best bet would be to go online and order some. These sites get GREAT reviews.

I was going to do this until my aunt offered to pay for my flowers.
  • A lot of people have great success with the floral department of places like Central Market or Whole Foods.  I don't know if those are out in W. Texas, but if you have HEB or Tom Thumb or something like that, you might check their prices!

That reminds me... Sams Club and Costco also sell wedding flowers already arranged.
  • If you are only wanting personal flowers for your wedding party, you should be able to do it for around $500 (maybe more, maybe less, depending on the size of your party).  Alot of girls here that only need personal flowers use like a Central Market or Market Street type of place -- is there anything like that where you live?

There are also online places like Sam's where you can order things like bouts and bouquets already assembled so that might be an option also.  Lastly, you could order the flowers in bulk and DIY them yourself, but without some training or help that could be difficult.
  • There should be a Market Street or maybe an Allied out in your area.  I got my flowers from Market Street and they were beautiful.  However, a couple of girls ordered flowers from a wholesaler on line and then took floral arranging classes.  This might be an avenue for you to explore as well.

Also, I will say that I think grocery store flowers are great.  I can get a dozen roses at Tom Thumb for about $15 for a quick gift if I need them.
  • Where in West Texas are you? I'm originally from San Angelo, if that helps and have a few connections out there if you would like. Again, I agree with everyone else, and go sams club or HEB (we have both in San angelo) or something along those lines. Good luck to a fellow West Texan!
  • Im getting my flowers @ Market Street and its about $450 and I have 5 BM and 5GM plus moms, dads, and grandparents.  For some of my centerpieces I bought silk flowers  www.silkflowersfactory.com and hobby lobby.

I also am wondering where you are from in West Texa.  I spent several years in Lubbock and my fiance and his family are from there.  Love me some West Texas sunsets.

I second Julie on the Market Street recommendation.  They have an awesome floral department and pretty reasonable prices for wedding floral.  There quality is great as well.  I can't remember what the floral was like at the regular United Supermarkets but you could check out their floral as well -- I just know their Market Streets are more well-known for that stuff since they do full-service catering for weddings, do wedding cakes, and then offer the floral side as well.

If Market Street fails you for whatever reason, I've also heard great things about fiftyflowers.com.  Sam's has really downsized their bulk floral selections and I don't know much about Costco's.  GL!

  • I too am a fellow west texan. If you're in the Abilene area, you might try Bitsy's (by ACU), Sam's, or HEB/United.
  • I'm from West Texas: Andrews....tiny town, but if you're around my area let me know and I can ask some friends that have gotten married out there what they did for flowers.
  • I know a lady that is AWESOME at making custom designs and very reasonable! I got my whole floral package for like $275 (with shipping... no bridesmaids or groomsmen. But I did have 12 kissing balls made, bridal bouquet, toss bouquet, grooms/3 fathers boots, 3 grandmas corsages, 2 moms corsages, etc). VERY REASONABLE PRICES! Here is a pic of my kissing ball that matches everything else (I was very specific with roses, colors, handle size and color, feathers, bling pins, etc). This lady is awesome, if you have a vision...she can create it! Kissing balls were $15 each without shipping (whole shipping costs were $30 for entire package)!

Email me at Michellerawkz@yahoo.com for her info! All I ask is you please tell her I referred you to her!

  • Thank you all! I did try Market Street here and just for my bouquet, BM's bouquets (3), GM's/dad's bouts (5) and 3 corsages was given a quote of $700!!! I was also using less expensive flowers to try and keep the cost down, so that's why I'm a little disappointed. Market Street does have a great floral dept. but they're a lot more than I can afford to pay for the above. I called other florists here and they are the same or more. I live here in the Lubbock area and really am surprised at how much fresh flowers are costing me just for what I'm wanting (any floral arrangements or ceremony decos. I was hoping to have are now way out of the question).

I was given a number to a lady here that does flowers out of her home and she has albums of work she has done and references too. I told her over the phone what my budget was and what I was wanting and she said she could definitely do it for less than even what my budget was! She's even renting out a few small items at no additional charge and helping me with having a candy bar (which I always wanted to have) for 160 people, all within budget! Her flowers look just as good as Market Street's or some of these other floral shops so I'm really glad I found her! Thanks for all of the advice, Market Street was the only one of the stores you all mentioned above that we have in this area :(
