it's 2012! (photographer question!)

well ladies, it's finally 2012! am i the only one who never thought it would get here?! i'm finally starting to get my stuff together and have a meeting with a photographer on monday. i'm so excited! she sent me an email with very detailed info and i love love loooove her portfolio! her pricing seems reasonable and she seems overall like a very nice person. i've heard that's key - finding someone you're comfortable with, which is something i am definitely hoping to find.

what are some of the things you ladies asked when meeting with your potential photographer for the first time? should i bring anything with me? any other tips?

i joined here when i first got engaged (a looooong two years ago) but i think now that i can see the light at the end of the tunnel i'll be frequenting the boards more often.

happy 2012 all! :)

Re: it's 2012! (photographer question!)

  • Have you already had an engagement photo session?
That was a fun way to interact with our photographer.
Also, it's maybe a good idea to have a list of "must have/take" that you talk with them about. Do they have a package with more than one photographer? It'd be good to have more than one person shooting :)
  • Do they include all of the rights to your photos in their packages? Will the photographers be with you the entire day or do their packages include only a limited number of hours? (I wanted to make suer they would be able to capture all of the photos from getting ready to the last dance.) Definitely ask to see some of their albums too. (I had browsed my photogs portfolio online, but actually seeing their albums gave me a better idea about the quality I would be getting.) Also, do they shoot just one wedding a day?

    HTH! :)
    Anniversary
  • Check and see if they have assistants as well. Our photographer has someone taking shots of everyone else watching us! lol
As it was mentioned, check the hours of work; are they there the entire day from morning prep until last dance or just for a few hours in the day?
Processing times might be a good question too - how long do you have to wait for the proofs?
Does your package include engagement shots? A trash the dress session? Prints?
Most importantly see how you feel around the photographer. If you're not at ease, that might be an issue. You need to feel comfortable around them if you want to have good pics :)

  • One that a friend learned the hard way - Verify that the photog you're talking to is THE photog that will be there on your day.... She booked one and didn't realize that the way the contract is worded he was able to send someone that worked for him in his place while he worked another wedding... he did the getting ready then left for the second wedding, so she was walking down the aisle when she noticed the photog was not her photog... how horrible would that be?

</div><div>YES this! A lot of them have lesser qualified photographers or just photogs with dif styles working for them and they could be the ones shooting your wedding. This happened to someone I know as well :(</div><div>My photog has many other working for him, but he never lets a couple book with him unless they meet with the one shooting their wedding first. And luckily for us, we get the "head honcho" shooting our wedding (it's a bit pricier but he's amazing!!!".

  • thanks so much everyone! i'm going to be bringing a list of these points/questions so i know exactly what to ask/look for!

    i appreciate your help!

as far as an engagement shoot, not yet. things were a bit delayed because my fiance was stationed in new orleans with the coast guard for half of our engagement so now that he's back and settled, it's time to get things moving. i do know that in the info she sent it, an engagment session is included as long as a deposit is left once a contract is signed. so that's something i plan on taking advantage of (should she wind up being our photographer!)

    will keep you posted! :)
