Are lillies 'bad'?

Our florist did sample centerpieces for us that feature gerber daisies, mums, and lillies.

The thing is we are having a Chinese wedding (or hybrid anyway) and mums are meant for funerals in chinese culture, so we're having that changed.

How about (white) lillies ? I heard they were kind of funeral flower as well ?

I think that the flower meanings are a bit antiquated and old fashioned.  I would not worry about it.  Besides this website has nice things to say about white lilies:  http://www.iflorist.com/t-meaning.aspx

I would make sure that the florist cuts out the filaments/anthers (the part that has the pollen) because it will stain white clothes.

Flower meanigs are out of touch. While I agree, lillies remind me of funerals - so for gladiolas and iris, ferns especially.

Unless you decked your wedding out in any one of these, I doubt anyone would notice or think that. Just do what you like :]

I love lillies, but I'd be worried about putting really fragrant ones in your centrepieces.  the fragrance can interfere with tasting the food and some people are alergic to them.

I love all types of lilies, but I understand using the fragrant oriental lilies in bouquets and cetnerpieces can remind people of funerals.

What you can do it look to another type of lily. One is an asiatic lily. These come in a variety of colors and do not have any scent to them. Their petals do not curl as the oriental lilies would, but would look very beautiful in centerpieces.

If you're looking for more color in your centerpieces you could look into using volcano lilies, but they are hard to get out of season.

I agree with PP... they wouldn't really matter unless it matters to you )like the mums). I mean, my mom doesn't like carnations because they remind her of weddings. That's because her grandmother's wedding when she was a kid had a bunch of carnations. So its just really your preference =)

I'm planning to use long stem lilies in my wedding as well. But I'm going to go with the mango colored. I think they are beautiful, so I don't care about the old fashioned meaning.

I agree that the flower meanings are way out of style.  Who decided those anyway?  To me, roses remid me of funerals which is why I can't stand them.  I'm avoiding them at all cost in my wedding.  You have to go with what you like and what they mean to you.  Not what somebody made up a long time ago.
