Wedding Cake

Okay, so I am on an extremely low budget. What is your opinion on a cake from Albertson's? I wish I could have this wedding over the top but financially we just can't. I am 3 months away and at this point I am just wanting to finalize everything. The cake would be about $200 fora  3 tier cake, that includes delivery.

Re: Wedding Cake

  • I love sweets so as long as it tastes good I don't care! but if a cake from there is within your budget go with that. personally I like Costco and Sam's club cakes and if you do want to use a bakery I think the Cake Guys have cheaper packages
  • Why not? Go for it :)

BTW, a went to a tasting with a friend and the (expensive!) bakery accidentaly left the door open to their store room, where I could see the Duncan Hines cake mix boxes. I'm not saying that all bakeries do that, NO WAY, but that there are some high-end ones that do, so I wouldn't feel bad about it.
  • I would love to do a cake from Costco but they only have the sheet cakes. I really want my cake to look like a wedding cake. Trust me, if Costco could do it I would jump on that in a heartbeat.
  • As long as you like the way it looks/tatstes then who cares where it comes from! I know a ton of people who have gotten there cakes from Market Street/Sams/Costco.. Cakes  can be ridiculously expensive!

We are trying to figure out what we are going to do for our cake too so that we can keep it under budge. We are thinking either a small wedding cake for us/bridal party then cupcakes for everyone else.. or maybe a small 2 tier cake for us, and then just sheet cakes in the back that are passed out. Some high end bakeries will make "dumy cakes" too so that it looks like you have a beautiful 4 tear monstrosity, wile againn.. sheet cake int he back! So many options to fit your budget!

Whats best about getting it at Albertsons is that everyone loves it and finds out that it was from Albertsons they will be BLOWN AWAY with your super savy budgeting skills!
  • You would be surprised how many bakeries do this. It makes for predictable results everytime, most of them go 100% homemade on the frosting though.

  • Have you looked into Eatzi's? They have DELICIOUS cakes. They will customize them for you as well, they just dont do fondant. That's where I am getting my cakes from and my co-worker just got married this past March and she used them as well.

IMHO Albertson, or any store bought cake will be just fine, they actually do a really good job decorating them and they taste good too.

Another idea to keep the cake budget low would be for where ever you choose to order your cake from to have them frost it really simple, most places charge more for detailing, then decorate your cake with real flowers.
  • My two cakes are $400 and that includes delivery. I found her from the girls on the knot here. I think it was $2pp. We did a tasting and loved the cakes. Mine is champange with a vanilla buttercream frosting. Fiance's grooms cake is chocolate with peanut butter frosting. Her name is Tabitha Ballard.

  • My best friend in high school used Albertson's and I'm sorry to say the whole thing collapsed and tipped over.  It's not just about the taste or decorating, it's also the delivery and set up to keep in mind.

Tell me more about this Tabitha Ballard!?
  • The Cake Guys aren't that cheap, even with the packages.

I did Ruth Robbins, and it was 600 for my cake (3 tiers, 2 flavors) and a Grooms cake (Rangers ballfield). Including delivery.

I've never actually thought to ask where cake was from when I was eating it. I doubt anyone would think twice about it.

We are also using Tabitha Ballard and getting some pretty great prices - less than $400 to feed 150 people. I can't remember how many servings we decided on but we are doing 4 (smaller) cakes, and she doesn't charge any extra to split your servings up like that. I felt like some of her flavors were very homemade tasting and some weren't, but they were good enough for me (and very fresh).

    Here's her website and e-mail:

  • You could always get a small tiered cake for yall to cut (or have someone make one) then get a sheet cake from costco or sams. I want to have the tiered cake for looks but frankly all the cakes ive tasted dont compare to costco when it comes to taste.

Doesn't Market Street do actual wedding cakes, not just sheet cakes?  From what I know of Market Street, they take great pride in their bakery items and the quality surpasses those of regular grocery stores.  They will build you a better wedding cake than Albertsons for likely a similar price.   If Tabitha Ballard's cakes aren't your cup of tea, this would be my recommendation.

This...definately do a tasting with her. There were flavors I have tried from other bakeries and loved that she didnt' do as well but others, like the champange and vanilla butter cream frosting that I could not get enough of. I think all 4 tiers of mine are different flavors at no extra charge. One of the thigns I was impressed with was the amount of flavors. She also told me that if there was a flavor there I wanted but she didnt' have on her list that she would make it for me to try.

  • Definitely do a tasting.  I honestly don't mean to offend anyone, but being a cake snob, I'd probably go with Market Street solely based on consistency and price.  We did not have a good tasting with Tabitha... maybe we just didn't try the right flavors from her?

  • I know that the Tom Thumb on NW Expy does "fancy" cakes -- they had a sample on display all the time.  I don't think there's anything wrong with a grocery store cake, as long as it's good.  I am a BIG wedding cake snob -- it is one of the factors on which I judge the success of the wedding.  You just want it to taste great.

  • Do you know anyone in your circel of family and friend's who can bake? My friend is baking the wedding cake and groom's cake for me as a gift for us. I also have a chocolate buffet (german chocolates since i am german.)I apologize for my spelling mistakes.
  • Could you have a decent sized (or fake cake) that has a few tiers you cut and serve sheet cake to some of your guests? If you have a large enough wedding, I don't think many people will notice, as long as it tastes good (as pp suggested).

I would highly recommend not going with a family friend unless you KNOW they do a good job. I went to a wedding where the MOH's mom made the cake and I nearly choked on how bad it was. Bad fondant (hello gumpaste) and dry chalk-like cake, a cake does not make. The bride was mortified and didn't say anything since it was a friend.

Cupcakes are a great alternative. We did cupcakes for our cake and mini pies for the grooms cake (I helped my MIL make everything and it was a great way to involve her. She also VOLUNTEERED to do this and loves baking so I knew I could trust she would do a great job and I wasn't taking advantage of her). We had 4 cupcake flavors and 4 pie favors. We had so many left over, we packed up boxes for our guests to take home on the way out. (Even after that, we still had so many, my MIL just took boxes and handed them out to the homeless on the way to the hotel).
  • Check out Creative Memories in Hurst, TX 817-268-2910. My sis uses them for every cake even her wedding cake and its delicious.  Our venue includes ours cakes in our package but they are through Candy Haven in Denton. Check both of those out and they might be in your price range
  • We're doing Annie's in Wylie who will bend over backwards for you.  My FI and Mom have gone twice for tastings - we wants a stronger flavor in our icings and she will make changes. We're having multiple cakes, decorated with flowers and on different size tierred vases and she's even doing one of them with our family recipe.  Love this place!
