  I only got one (in Cambridge you have to pay like, $10 each). The bank and SS office required a certified copy. I don't think the RMV even looked at the marriage certificate, since I already had the SS paperwork showing I had changed the name (though, not that actual card yet, if I'm remembering correctly).

  
  

  I thought it was odd that the bank was so strict about the certificate, since they had offered to change it over the phone a couple of times when I called about different things, and I know other people who had no problem, so I guess my bank was just really strict (B of A in Malden).

  
  

  No one else asked for anything, although I haven't done my passport yet. And they all give youthe certificate back right away.

  Most places accept a copy (or just look at the original and give it back to you - SSA and DMV here).  I didn't want to have to pay MA $10 each for multiple copies.  

  
  

  I've had to send copies to my student loan holders and my medical insurance provider so far.  

  
  

  Car insurance needed no proof at all.  The bank used my new license (although I was opening a new account with my new name)

  
  

  American Express asked for a photocopy of a government issued id card (license, passport or military id) to make the change for me.
