Name change question

I know this has been asked a million times...

But can one of you recently married (or not so recent) ladies give me the run down.

Where do I start? What's the order? etc. Thanks so much!

ps - my license expires in July. If I do all the name change stuff now, what does the license renewal cost? To save money I'd change it then but I would like my license to have my new name, so if the cost isn't a lot, I'll do it both times. But I don't know what it costs and $20 or $200 is a big difference!

The order actually doesn't matter now that the dmv gets your ssn electronically. I started at the SS office, then the DMV. I got around to credit cards whenever I had free time.

It's only $10 for a new licence due to name change. It will still expire whenever your current one does, and license renewals are $80.50 now I believe.

If you plan on changing your name with work you have to get a new social security card. Your employer cannot legally change your name until you provide them with a copy of your new SS card.

I did my DL first along with registration.  Then I did my banks and credit cards, Student loans and all that jazz.  Then social security

I had no problems at work.  My paycheck is my maiden name hyphen married name.  I kept my maiden name for email, etc.  And I only did the hyphen b/c i deal with so many clients they wouldn't know me by my married name

It really doesn't matter. But it is important to do both of them. You can have your taxes held up if your name on your taxes doesn't match what the SS office has. Credit cards and other accounts don't really matter, but your license and ss card should be updated.

Thanks for the Christmas wishes - I hope you have a wonderful Christmas as well!

Thanks! I think I will wait until the New Year then. That way I don't need to rush this week and risk one office updating and other's not. Have a great new year!

Go to Social Security first! That is because you have to show ID in your previous name at the SS office with your marriage certificate to change your social security # to your new name.

Then I went to DMV. Then I did my credit cards, bank accounts, frequent flyer accounts and I recently just got my new passport. If you need a heads up on the process for any of those let me know! (not bad for 6 1/2 months married huh?)
