Skittles

I am a chocoholic but since I'm trying to change my eating habits, I have not been as obsessed (no oreos, lindor truffles, Reese's, etc!). I did buy Klondike 100 calorie bars not only because of chocolate but it's literally 100 degrees here so it cools me down.
Anyways, went to the movies and couldn't for the life of me figure out what to snack on. I usually don't eat them but figured Skittles weren't so bad (right?!). Omg, now I'm addicted to them! Is this ok? Shoud I avoid them at all costs?

Re: Skittles

  • You might want to check out the nutritional information - they are high in calories and the worst part is it's EMPTY calories, just a bunch of sugar. At least with chocolate you get the tiniest amount of protein and the fat will shut off a bit of your hunger.

You may want to work more on portion control and not completely cut out things that you enjoy.
    image
  • You need to change your food attitude.

You don't need to avoid ANYTHING at all costs.  But use some moderation, and make better choices most of the time.  Skittles are probably one of the worst, candy wise, IMO, but you don't need to completely shun them.  Just don't eat a whole bag every day.

i seriously don't go to the movie theater without getting a buttered popcorn and an icee.  Never.  Because heck, it's not like I go there once a week and even then you have to live a little.  I just make sure the rest of my food is nutritionally and calorically balanced.  Heck, i had a twix bar today.

Also, skittles are pretty much just sugar.
  • I agree with you ladies, Skittles isn't a great option at all, but that one time isn't going to be the end all.  It's kind of like the 3 Musketeers ads that magically lessened when everyone figured out the truth - they have less fat and cals so they seem healthier, but they also have so much sugar (which eventually can turn to fat.)  On the other hand, you could have a payday or snickers if you need a fix, where there is a slight healthy balance with healthy fats and protein from the nuts.

But it all comes down to what J&K said...everything in moderation.

There are healthier ways to get your chocolate fix. Have you tried lara bar minis in chocolate? Its a date and nut based bar with cocoa powder. The minis are about 2-3 bites and its like eating a brownie. I just ate a full size chocolate lara bar for a snack because I'm heading to the pool in 15 minutes to swim laps.

Sorry, but I think this is nuts too.  Sometimes, you need some chocolate.  And it's ok to have chocolate.  Just don't eat a whole damn bag of mini Snickers.

I'm with you on this too. I allow myself a ghiardelli square most nights before bed as well. I was just trying to offer less guilty pleasures as well. When I'm pmsing I'm going to be honest all I want is to demolish a whole pint of icecream or a bag of mini snickers :D. I have to find other lesser evils to mix in the bag.

OP: If you love chocolate, moderate your intake.  If you cut it out entirely, you might end up eating a ton of it in one sitting later.  I eat chocolate on a regular basis, but only a little each day.  One truffle is about 76 calories, definitely a huge amount in the grand scheme of things.

    Sounds yummy, will def. try.
  • Wow... OK.  There is NO way to rationalize Skittles.  Even in portion control.  The stuff is straight sugar... It's not even about the calories at that point its about the way it screws around with your body in terms of insulin, blood glucose levels, etc.

Dark chocolate on the other hand, oh every day and twice on Sunday!  Has more good stuff packed in it than red wine, has GOOD fats, anti-oxidants, and has been shown to reduce cortisol levels and increase mood.

I have been known to have a stockpile of tiny boxes of Junior Mints or the little York peppermint patties.  When I go to the movies I will take one with me. . . . while I don't know the calories offhand, the small amount of chocolate and mint satisfies my movie candy craving, and because it's such a small portion I don't have the option of overeating even if I wanted to!

Also, the Skinny Cow clusters are amazing.  I would recommend them when you need a candy fix too.

  • All this talk about chocolate... now I want some!
I might be super weird, but I just keep a stash of baking chocolate (semi-sweet) in my cupboard. It will fix a craving but it's not so smooth and delicious that I'll "accidently" eat the whole thing in an emergency. Because i've had many a ghiradelli (sp?) and lindt "accident." haha.

I always do popcorn at the movie theatre - much more difficult to do severe calorie damage with something light and fluffy than with boxes of sugar.

Thanks to my awkward teenage years, I had braces so anything that gets stuck in my teeth I can't stand. No popcorn for me (but it smells delicious!).

  • Mer and Trick you give THE WORST nutrition advice and you are pretty damn ignorant about weight loss as well. You can have Skittles in moderation. EVERYTHING in moderation. Unless this person has DM I or II, she won't die from one serving of candy. THE FUUCK? She won't get fat from eating a serving of skittles either. OP have the Skittles if you want them, just watch your portions. Don't eat the entire box.

i totally agree w you. thr is no need to overreact over something as silly as skittles although i also agree tht dark chocolate is much healthier and has a less chance of causing diabetes. im boarderline diabetic so i have to watch my sugar intake. ima sucker for twizzlers and dark chocolate w caramel. twizzlers are fat free so i think im safe there. but definitely get off your high horse dear.
