I am getting married a very unique location, Planterra in West Bloomfield. The event coordinator there recommended that I consider that the venue is not a standard banquet hall, and that a majority of photographers are used to shooting in your standard banquet hall. Planterra is a conservatory with floor to ceiling windows and a ton of foliage. The event coordinator recommended checking out not just wedding photographers, and looking more for someone who is use to shooting landscape or architechtural. Any help or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!!

Re: Photographer

  • I am using Weddings by Adrienne and Amber. They are "wedding photographers" However they have so much more they can do. I would check them out.

  • I don't think it's a bad idea to seek out alternative photographers but I wouldn't disregard wedding photographers. You aren't paying the photographer to get photos of the building or background, they are still shooting you and your wedding. You want them to have expirience capturing the moments and details of your big day, not the venue. The venue will serve as your background and it could be different than some photographers are used to but just try to find one that you notice has many different types of photos to look at (IE different lighting, seasons, colors, etc).  Make sure the photographer you choose lets you see blogs or full portfolios of one wedding. Any photographer can show you 30-50 of their best shots if they have been around long enough. Those best shots may look great but the person may still not be very good overall.
  • I'm also possibly looking into getting married at plantera---The photographer I'm using defenitely would work for you..She does most of her shoots outdoors so is used to working with the natural lighting/type of atmosphere planterra has. --Her company is Sarah Kossuch Photography if you want to check her out. She's very reasonably priced too.

  • I tend to agree with the PPs. I would go with a "wedding photographer", you are paying the photographer to capture your day and your emotions, not the buildings and background. I think most professional photographers are qualified and have captured many weddings that are not in standard banquet halls. A lot of photographers do destination weddings--those are definitely not in a standard banquet halls.

  • My photographer, Tamara Wade of Silver Thumb Photography is great and has experience with lots of venues. She also specializes in natural light photos, so I think she'd be great in a place that has lots of windows.

As PPs said, I'd still stick with a wedding photographer. Your photos won't ONLY be in your banquet hall. They'll be on the grounds or in other locations if you travel around town at all. You want someone who can capture the emotion and has creative ideas for posing -- or is good at capturing the day without posing (photojournalistic style). People that shoot buildings all day might not have as much expertise with moving people :-)

  • When I got married at Colony Club we knew it would January and that most of our pictures would be indoors. We made sure we got a photographer that had worked at our venue before so she would know all the tricks to lighting and location. Amanda Williams did a phenomenal job for us. I would absolutely recommend her.
